Chris Z performs spoken word with The World Is A Beautiful Place at the Webster Theatre in Hartford. This piece, entitled "Tyler's Big Day Out" is a response to the very negative and hate-speech laden online reactions to a workshop Chris ran in April, one specifically aimed at the use of the word "nigga" by a bunch of white people.

From his Tumblr

This is me.in April, i tried to hold a workshop in response to a white dude saying the words “get money nigga” at the end of one of his band’s songs. it didn’t go well. i was being “too pc” for people’s liking. they thought i was on a guilt tripping spree, trying to make them all feel racist.  these people were defending the band’s right to say “nigga” so, i gotta say, they were being racist. i got called retarded, a retarded nigger, a faggot, a nigger faggot, etc etc. fuck that.you seem to think that because you don’t/ wear a white hood & burn crosses/ that you aren’t racist./that your “black friends” and vaguely left-leaning political views pre-ordain you to a lifetime supply of good dude credits. in 2012 when a Black youth is 7 times more likely than a white youth to be punished for a comparable offense in school, we are colorblind right?[i]when college educated Black people make less than their high school educated white counterparts, they are just unlucky right[ii]? or maybe not trying hard enough.when white authority places no value on Black life (see police brutality convictions[iii], stop and frisk procedures, etc) it’s all wrong place wrong time right?in 2012 racism exists in a bubble. tiny pockets in the South, in Arizona, but not here. not you.if anything us here in the North East have become too PC right? because one night i decided to try and call racism by its name. because your friends think that word is archaic. it’s funny. no harm done.i did my research.  a study in 2011 (archaic) conducted by Penn State found that Black people often exhibit what they called Racial Battle Fatigue, or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder/ the Poverty Clinic found that micro-transgressions against People of Color had not only psychological but also physical effects.Robert Carter, relooked at ‘Carson’s Conceptual Model for Trauma’ as it related to Race and the million tiny slights whites commit without thought.and there’s the Perilla Study (2002), Glenn Miller’s The Trauma of Insidious Racism, so on and so forthbut  yet, when i tried to research the long-standing psychological damage of middle class white people being told to watch their fucking tongues… i was shocked to find none.but i guess what i forgot is: you are the expert right? cause people always call you…. oh wait. there isn’t a slur for you that denotes the 100’s of years of oppression, that indicates all the actions others commit that attempt to tell you that you aren’t even human, that triggers all the times your mother and grandparents ET ALL fought for the most basic rights and were continuously told they didn’t deserve those rights.that word doesn’t exist, does it?what i am getting at is, shut your fucking mouth you whiny goddamn overgrown babies and open your ears.because maybe you don’t wear a hood but defending the repeated saying of racist words under a guise not even as base as freedom of speech but that they aren’t harmful?well that’s fucking racism.

Someone tell Mindless Self Indulgence and My Chemical Romance.

Can we not post spoilers please?

I don't think anything posted here could exactly be called a 'spoiler'. You know all of these things about Frobisher and Sexsmith within the first 5 minutes of the movie.

To the person who didn't understand why there were so many characters played by the same actors in 6 different stories in Cloud Atlas that's part of what makes the novel so brilliant and original.

from David Mitchell
Literally all of the main characters, except one, are reincarnations of the same soul in different bodies throughout the novel identified by a birthmark...that's just a symbol really of the universality of human nature. The title itself "Cloud Atlas," the cloud refers to the ever changing manifestations of the Atlas, which is the fixed human nature which is always thus and ever shall be. So the book's theme is predacity, the way individuals prey on individuals, groups on groups, nations on nations, tribes on tribes. So I just take this theme and in a sense reincarnate that theme in another context

Movements of ascent and descent, for example, appear in each of the six stories. They are suggestive of humanity's larger moral epiphanies and failings.

The number "six" is repeated throughout the novel. Some examples include: six interlocking stories; the music score Cloud Atlas is a "sextet with overlapping soloists" (not unlike the six stories); Sixsmith is the name of a main character, who is 66 years old; Eva is the result of "six centuries of breeding"; a police officer is shot six times in the back; Napier knew Luisa when she was six; Cavendish is sixty-something years old, he needs 60,000 pounds to avoid being "beat up", his hospital window only opens six inches; Sonmi recites Six Catechisms, drives six-wheeler fords, lives on the university sixth-floor where she is left alone for six days, completes secondary school in six months; A Prescient woman arrives in Zachry's sixteenth year, he rolls a six'n'six when playing dice, etc

Why the number 6? Because it's the first perfect number Maybe the number of lives the main characters soul took to live their perfect life.

Kapunua how are you holding up with the nausea?

I didn't start feeling better until around the 21st or 22nd week so just letting you know it does improve though at the time you feel like you will never be able to eat normally again.

Cloud Atlas is a brilliant novel, and the film is brilliant as well, but in a different way. I don't think US audiences "get it" because they can't explain what it's about in one or two short sentences. It doesn't fit into a sound bite.

It's a shame. It's a very brave piece of film making, but that isn't appreciated in the US. People want to see shit get blown up. Hopefully it will find its audience in Europe when it's finally released over there.

Morning sickness can last throughout a pregnancy. The older you are the worse the morning sickness can be. My mother had no morning sickness for her 1st five pregnancies. None. She was sick for the entire nine months of her pregnancy with me. She was over 40 by then. Age plays an important role in any pregnancy. Having a supportive husband boyfriend or baby daddy can make a big difference. Him holding your hair back while you're throwing up, putting a cold pack on the back of your neck, massaging your hands and feet, bringing you soup and saltines in bed can make all the difference between a happy pregnancy and a miserable pregnancy.

Anonymous said...

No pregnancy should be miserable. Not if the woman made a conscience decision to have the baby. She should take on the role of mother, protector, guardian and nurturer from day one of deciding to continue with the pregnancy. Without complaint. The life growing inside of you should come first. Before anything and anyone else. That should be your life and main concern for the next 18 years . Your child. Your choice. Baby daddy or no baby involved. The child comes first. Before career, before sexual satisfaction, before personal goals, b efore you. If you aren't willing to give up your life or your lifestyle for your baby you shouldn't have a baby. I would give my life, my career and all that I own for mine. Their father would do the same.

9:50 said...

Kapunua I found that I was very sensitive to food smells especially coffee or pungent foods that would trigger the worst bouts.

I also found eating very small portions of salted crackers or slowly drinking a small cup of non acidic juice would help with the nausea.

Anonymous said...

Without complaint

Of course you are allowed to complain. If you are exhausted and feel awful, you can have a little moan about it. It doesn't mean you love the child growing inside you any less. Becoming a parent is the most wonderful thing in the world. But it is only human to complain once in a while. That's what makes us human.

Hope the nausea is abating Kapunua. I found my morning sickness came back for a little bit at the end of the first trimester, when I thought it had gone away for good. I think general tiredness and just your normal health can come into play with that. This is the season for cold viruses etc, and that can effect the body.

Bananas and sips of still, chilled water helped me.

Good luck.

I don't agree with the age issue mentioned. I had two children, one in my 30's and one in my 40's. I had morning sickness all throughout my first pregnancy, but absolutely none in my second. The labor was easier too.

As far as the baby daddy goes, that's pretty much bunk as well. I found I got more support from my good friends, sister, mother and female cousins.

Anonymous said...

Also, without complaint? Really?

What planet are you from? The Duggar Family Planet?

The last few months suck, and everyone I know complains. You have the right to complain when you feel like shit.

Bite my ass, I'll complain if I want to.

kapunua said...

Also, thanks for the tips, everyone! The last two days were bad, but today was pretty good!

kapunua said...

I also want to add, the absolute last thing I want when I'm feeling sick is someone hovering around me. If I have to puke, I don't want to see or hear a soul within a twelve mile radius and I certainly don't want them in the bathroom with me. I don't want to be touched, coddled or even looked at when I don't feel well.

Anonymous said...

I also want to add, the absolute last thing I want when I'm feeling sick is someone hovering around me.

I agree with you completely. I want to be left alone when I'm sick. Same goes for when I was in labor. I had to ask my mom and sister to leave because they kept trying to "comfort" me, and at one point when my husband kept saying "you can do it," I told him to "shut the fuck up and get down here and push yourself or leave me the hell alone."

Not everyone handles pregnancy the same way, and nobody does it wrong. If it's right for you, then it's right. Every pregnancy and every mother is different.

Anonymous said...

To the person that said only older Moms get bad morning sickness. You are misinformed. It has nothing to do with age. It has to do with hormone levels. Some doctors think it is actually a sign of a good pregnancy.

So take your ageism and stuff it.

Anonymous said...

Good sign Kapunua!

Just wait till the cravings start! And the endless kicking just when you're trying to get some sleep ;

Anonymous said...

Oh, and when the baby gets the hiccups -- usually right about the time you go to bed every night.

Being pregnant is an amazing experience. With all the sickness, the aches and pains and the sleepless nights, I still remember my pregnancies as some of the best times of my life. I'm sure you'll feel that way too, Kapunua.

P.S. Complain away. I certainly did. :D

kapunua said...

LOL every time someone tells me "I was sick and it was so awful, but being pregnant was the best time!" all I want to say is "YOU SIT ON A THRONE OF LIES!" ;D

With voter support Individual states could start refusing to pay federal taxes. They could vote to have all tax dollars spent remain in their state to take care of their states problems. It worked for the colonists when they tired of having too much of their money going to a monarch who didn't understand their problems. No state should have to beg the federal government for permission to keep their tax dollars to help their own people. Each state is unique and each state has a set of unique problems that need to be addressed. The federal government takes way too much state money and leaves too many states at the mercy of the federal government who never gives back what is due.

Lol @ morons petitioning for secession. My state was one of the first to hit the required number of signatures to get a review by the White House, and our governor just shook his head and said something along the lines of "How ridiculous." He's not stupid enough to think that our very poor state can do without the federal aid it gets. After all, we're one of those Red States that gets back more federal dollars than we pay in. How is it that so many people in my state don't realize this?

Civics class should not be an elective, and more people should have paid attention in American History when we studied the Civil War. But you know, some people just don't learn.

I disagree 7:22 I suffered the nausea all day every day for nearly six months only with one baby.

Sleeping baby pictures are awesome, maybe because sleep is such a rare commodity once the baby comes. I miss my kids being small, but I do not miss the sleepless nights.

Each pregnancy is different. Morning sickness is caused by hormone fluctuation. This is not determined by the age of the mother, the sex of the baby, the number of babies, or anything else. You can't predict who will get morning sickness. It just happens.

Nice review of Cloud Atlas by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. on Huffington Post.

He seems to feel the same way I do about it -- sad that it hasn't managed to connect to audiences, given its message of resistance to bigotry, prejudice, and oppression.

I love that he took his kids to see it. I took mine too. Even my 13 year old loved it, and we had a great discussion about racism and homophobia afterwards. It's too bad that so many parents are missing the opportunity to do that with their kids.

Anonymous said...

People in America don't want to see a film with an anti-oppression message. They love their racism and homophobia too much.

Having a baby is expensive. Expect to spend 15k out of pocket the first year. That's with good medical insurance that will pay for pre natal vitamins, dr visits, required blood tests, ultra sounds and the delivery. Without coverage it'll be more like 25k out of pocket expense. That's not including day care if mom plans to keep working and dad or another family member isn't willing to stay home and care for baby. You can't forget about health insurance for the baby once it's born. Private insurance is expensive.

That's why planned parenthood exists. To help prepare a couple or individual emotionally, mentally and financially for the blessing coming their way. Start saving for private school and college now.
