My view on the word nigger is that you cannot say it is OK for black people to use it but not OK for white people to use it. No-one has the right to say one group of people are not allowed to use a word but others can. It is a legitimate word. But having said that, I don't think anyone should be using this word, it's a word that has had it's time, it's on a par with calling a person with physical difficulties a spastic. This may have been OK in the 70's but not in this day and age. I cringe when I hear black people using the word nigger but if they continue to do so on a regular basis and in the public forum like in songs, thay cannot complain when white people do the same. One group of people cannot stake a claim to language, it's out there for everyone to use.
I'm sure many people do not agree with me but there you go. I just think there are certain words no-one should be using and this is one of them but to say one lot can and others can't, that's not gonna work.
I disagree. Black people are allowed to refer to themselves and each other any way they want. Because they are oppressed worldwide, as white people we cannot tell them how to talk. It's called self actualization. Telling people of color "that's a bad word, you can't use it" is so condescending and demeaning it's beyond thinking about.
For instance, my friend and I always call each other "Hey bitch!" If a man greeted me like that, though, he'd be wearing his nuts as earrings. AND, what's more, if he had the gall to tell me "You shouldn't talk like that, it shows lack of self respect," he'd get a smack round the mush for telling me what's best for me.

All due respect to the Martin family, if I'm on that jury I'm finding George Zimmerman not guilty by reason of self defense. The facts that have come to light after the initial first 2 weeks of media hype, propaganda and bullshit. Florida juries are worse and more dumbass than OJ Simpson acquitting juries if they convict George Zimmerman. This kid was neither innocent nor defenseless in any way, shape or form.

The problem here is semantics. By the sociological definition of racism, one can argue that blacks cannot be racist against whites, because that definition assumes power.
If you are referring to racism interchangeably with prejudice, then the answer differs. Of course blacks can be prejudiced against whites, Hispanics, Asians, Native Americans, persons of mixed race, or even other blacks. Same goes for Hispanics.
Unfortunately, what happens more often than not in such discussions is that people on opposing sides wind up talking about different things, because their definitions of the word racism are not the same.
As to the question of Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman, nobody on this site has enough information to make any judgments on this case. It is now up for a jury to decide his guilt or innocence. As it should be.

But, I do recognize that when most people say that "blacks can be racist against whites" they are often using the other definition -- written by white people or not, Merriam Webster is a reliable source.
Blacks cannot be institutionally racist against whites, but they can certainly harbor prejudices against them. Given their history of enslavement and repression, I think they have reason to feel that way.

I'm not the anon you were addressing that to, but I would like to make clear that I have always defended Kapunua against those people who harass her and try to discredit her. I think she's a very intelligent, principled person, and more often than not, I agree with her. I just think that in this instance, if she remained calm and tried to explain the sociological definition of racism to some people (because, truly, there are a lot of people who don't get that -- I run into it all the time), she might be better able to make her point.
Having said that, I admire and respect Kapunua. I think she has a good heart, and she always means well. All of us lose our shit from time to time, and God knows she's been given reason enough to do so, both here and at the Place That Shall Not Be Named.

The problem with racism, homophobia, sexism, etc., is that people use those "opinions" to influence public policy. "Don't ask, don't tell" is, quite simply, homophobia as law. So is the ridiculous "Defense of Marriage Act". All of the laws being passed in state legislatures around the U.S. regarding women's healthcare are nothing more than institutionalized sexism.
So, what we have here is more than simply just people with differing opinions. You have people trying to force their beliefs on others. If you don't believe in gay marriage, that's fine. Don't go marrying someone of the same gender as yourself. But don't tell someone else they can't do it.
I do know that I don't like to be around people who always make me feel wrong and that includes friends, associates, relatives or total strangers. I am not saying that I need to be around people who cave into my opinions and let me be right. I think it's great that Kapunua has such strong opinions on important issues and I admire her for voicing them, often in the face of adversity- and 99% of the time I agree with her. I think it's terrible what she has gone through as a result of being so pro-active, and that even after many years some people still won't quit. That said, I don't think the person called out for being a bigot here is one of them. Said poster seems genuine, intelligent and to be actively trying to avoid trouble.
Who knows, the anon might be the biggest bigot in the world- but I don't think they have done anything here to suggest that or to deserve being called out as one. I don't think anyone should be tolerant of racism and I'm pretty sure anon wasn't implying that. Misunderstanding, maybe?

This argument is not about supporting prejudice or opression, it's how people get categorized as one for no logical reason other than saying something she doesn't agree with unrelated to opression. If it were another person I would say the same thing to them.
