Men who "learn" not to degrade women

I found this quote from an anon commenter on the last post and I thought it was relevant.

What do you guys think of Jay-Z's recent announcement?

Jay-Z has vowed to never use derogatory terms for women in his music again following the birth of his daughter, Blue Ivy Carter.

The rapper, who welcomed his first child with wife Beyoncé last weekend, has stated in a poem to celebrate the birth of baby Blue Ivy that he will drop the use of 'b*tch' - revealing that his degradation of women in his songs "has passed."

"Before I got in the game, made a change, and got rich/ I didn't think hard about using the word b*tch/ I rapped, I flipped it, I sold it, I lived it/ Now with my daughter in this world I curse those that give it. I never realized while on the fast track that I’d give riddance to the word bitch, to leave her innocence in tact."

The hip-hop icon continued:

"No man will degrade her, or call her name. I'm so focused on your future, the degradation has passed. I wish you wealth, health and insight. Forever young you may pass. Blue Ivy Carter, my angel."

I personally think of this as a start, but only that. He still has a lot of work to do. We see this with men a lot. They have a daughter and all of a sudden they don't like to see women degraded. There are two problems I see with this immediately.

One: Didn't his wife count as a woman who shouldn't be degraded? Or wasn't she "innocent" enough? He seemed to think it was all right for "non-innocent" women to be degraded.

And OK fine, it is good that he can see it from a different perspective now that he has a daughter and maybe he will extend this feeling to all women. I hope so. I hope he can continue to learn.

But the second problem is that it is still about HIM. It took him personally experiencing the feeling of "this is too close to me now and I don't want it to happen" in order for him to change.

Or as another anonymous commenter said on this blog,

I don't understand, Why does something dramatic have to happen in someone's life before they decide "Oh, yeah I gotta stop being this way because I don't want some one to mess with mine in the future."

Men should respect women not because the disrespect upsets men, but because it oppresses women. At least that is what I believe in cases like that.

However I still want to say that it is a good start and in my own opinion, if he continues to learn more about oppression and misogyny, then maybe he will come to realize this. I have hope.

We didn't hear a word like this from Gerard Way, Lindsey Way, or Frank Iero when they had daughters. Not one of them came forward and said "I never thought about how women were treated until I had a daughter, now I think I'll stop degrading them." So also in my opinion, Jay-Z is way ahead of them. MSI and MCR are still in the dark ages.

Also, I wish all of you a happy and healthy new year and the best of luck in 2012.

I don't see how anyone can defend a bill that is designed for no other reason than to humiliate and shame women who get abortions and the doctors who perform them. That is the only possible intent behind the proposed legislation in Tennessee.

It has even received criticism from many pro-life groups who feel it paints them as being mean spirited and vengeful.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

Unless you are one, it's always considered in bad taste to use such a slur. MCR took criticism for using it, so should Jessicka.

Clearly MCR did not do their homework before using the term. LADYBOY is fine. It's not a slur, at all.

Jessicka has nothing to apologize for.

I think when this blog first started, most of us never though that our rights and freedoms would ever come into question. The climate in the US is scary right now, and in comparison to the proposed legislation(s) limiting our rights does make Gerard and Lindsey seem somewhat less important.

But, what we all need to remember is that misogyny is so ingrained in our society that it permeates everything. We need to continue to speak out whenever we see it. We have to fight. We really have no other choice.

I see your point 2:00. I also agree it's very scary and I think it's implications are global. The climate in some parts of your country seems to be one of intolerance and control under the paternalistic guise of "care". Oh, so more news on what JGL is doing! This is so great. He re-wrote Red Riding Hood from a feminist perspective (as I mentioned) and asked for more writings based on the essay thing I wrote. So I decided to add a few more things to the collab and see if anything stuck. I wrote a dialogue piece about victim-blaming, with Red getting questioned on what she was wearing, why she followed the wolf, etc. And I wrote a naughty poem about Red choosing the Wolf instead of the Huntsman, because the Huntsman was a "Nice Guy (TM)" and the Wolf really just wanted to, umm, eat her. ^_^;;

He picked BOTH of them up and said they would make really good short films! And he said the "eat me" poem was "fantastic and really sexy." :DDDDD

So, there are hundreds of feminist entries into the collab! And HR is taking up the mantle and publishing a book on feminism. :D I am so happyl

Well the LA MSI show is next weekend. I wonder if any of Lindsey's friends will go along and support her? Maybe the ones who pretend they dislike violence against women, when really they promote people who propogate it...

And as for MCR, it's interesting how much time they spend bragging about how they're going to 'prove people wrong' (yet again) instead of just getting on with making their shitty music. Anyone would think Gerard was bitter about not being accepted into the music mainstream or something. It's nice to know he sees his fanbase as a 'barrier' to getting his pay check. Nice!

Excellent article on nymag.com regarding the GOP's War on Women.

I suggest everyone read it, for no other reason than the examples of Mitt Romney's actions towards women who were part of his church. Turns out he's just as anti-woman/anti-choice as Rick Santorum. He just doesn't want to talk about it in the press because he's afraid it will hurt his chances of becoming President (aka, the Mormon prophesied "White Horse").

P.S. I have to ask -- Kapunua, where do you stand on all of this? I notice you have been rather quiet here in regards to all the proposed legislation regarding a woman's right to choose.

Anonymous said...

A mother of four learned that she had a blood clot in her pelvis during a later, unexpected pregnancy, putting her own health and that of the fetus at risk. Romney visited the hospital where she “lay helpless, hurt, and frightened,” as she described it, only to tell her that “as your bishop, my concern is with the child.” The woman, who has recently identified herself as Carrel Hilton Sheldon, was enraged that he cared more about “the eight-week possibility” in her uterus than he did about her—and that he offered “judgment, criticism, prejudicial advice, and rejection” at a time when she needed support from spiritual leaders and friends.

This is very telling. If this is how this man views women, as baby-incubators first and foremost, he's definitely not someone I want in the White House.

Scary.

Who the fuck is Brian Schechtner? If any of your are talking about MCR's general manager he was with MCR throughout Project Rev plus. He was def with them when Mayo started the blog. I would think Mayo would have been more tour manager, stage manager or some sort of tech or roadie if you think that Mayo had anything to do with MCR at all. from what i've read Mayo had no idea who Gerard Way was. He never pretended to be someone he didn't know.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

Then you're on the wrong blog 7:22. Go ask the people at Mayo's.

Anonymous said...

Some people thought maybe Mayo was Jake Raggio. He was MCR's stage manager for years. He also works with Slipknot, I think? I don't know. I think it's possible it was just a crazy fangirl who was maybe following the band around and knew what was going on with them. I never saw any real evidence that this person was an insider. None of the "proofs" people offer really amount to a hill of beans. I think Kapunua was just too close to the situation at the time to see that she was being duped right along with the rest of those people who hung on Mayo's every word, in hopes they could save him from the clutches of the "evil MSI", alcoholism, drug addiction, and ruin, which was what Mayo's was always about. In the beginning, anyway.

Anonymous said...

Anyone else think that Mayo is one of the Lovelies?

kapunua said...

8:31 - it's possible. OTOH, one time, for giggles, I set up an "anti valentine" gift thing and directed Mayo over to it. I'll be the first to admit that I'm not any good at reading re-routed ISPs and such, but I set up a stat tracker (not the same one that everyone else used,) and then plugged Mayo's ISP into a Sam Spade program I had at the time. Apparently his hit came from wherever it was that their idiotic band was playing that night, but the original server was in NJ. I thought that was a little weird.

It could also easily have been some crazy fan who followed them around and knew what they were doing. That is also possible.

I will say that "SS" said something on the blog that I had said to him in person the night that I went to see his crappy Leathermouth band. (Man, if only I knew then what I know now. What a waste.) So quite possibly, it was him hitting that stat tracker.

Guess we will never know. :)

Huh? New wave is an old term, scene and subgenre of rock.

New Wave is a subgenre of rock music that emerged in the mid to late 1970s alongside punk rock. The term at first generally was synonymous with punk rock before being considered a genre in its own right that incorporated aspects of electronic and experimental music, mod subculture, disco and 1960s pop music

Wrong again! The music that started in the late '70's and early '80's in the synth pop wave was very different to the the music created after that era. For example: the creation of the Roland Alpha Juno in 1985 revolutionized the techno music scene after a music producer accidentally discovered it's whooshing sound and incorporated in a track that influenced other producers and started a whole new branch of electronic music.

Another thing people in the early breakbeat(hip hop) scene, paid BIG ATTENTION to the budding electronic music scene. Gary Numan was a huge influence in hip hop

6:25 has a big elitist chip on their shoulder.

They should work on their insecurities.

6:25 has a big elitist chip on their shoulder.

They sure do.

I luv Gary Numan too!

Music wouldn't be the same without these musicians, who were much maligned in their day.

All 6:25 does is constantly come here to argue all because we dislike their rockstah friends. Silly and immature.

Hey 6:25! have fun

All the kidz into it think they're so cool & original. It could be this decade's emo scene.

Did Forbes ever write about the emo scene?

Did any pop punk act sell 20,000 tickets in 9 minutes flat?

Does anyone really care, other than the fans of this music? I mean, Kings of Leon sold out Hyde Park two years ago (65,000 tickets) in less than five minutes. So what? Twilight sold a gazillion copies, but so what? It's still a pile of shit.

Very often, popularity = mediocrity. Just sayin'.

And mediocrity = unpopular or shit (depends on thee listener) music too.

Isn't the whole point of music to enjoy it? Different people enjoy different types of music. What you may think is great I may think is shit.

Sometimes people just want to hear stuff they makes them lose themselves in the music and forget about other things.

And face it it's a business, if a musician can't sell it they can't make a living from it, so it's VERY ELITIST(ha) to consider other forms of music shit just because it doesn't appeal to you.

I bet that half of those muso's that bitch about about mediocrity of their fellow musicians would love a slice of the popular action.

Anonymous said...

What about the pop/punk poops where getting signed to major labels when their music started becoming POPULAR???

I don't think it was for their creativity. Lol.

House music celebrates life.

Emo/punk music celebrates whining and rebellion.

Who cares?

People like what they like. You can't change someone's tastes by talking something up or down.

Like what you like and let others do the same.

Did you miss the point 7:10? It wasn't about changing someone's taste in music, it was how someone(3:55)was referring to mediocrity about particular styles, namely popular styles, of music.

It's all in the ear of the beholder.

It's kinda sweet seeing a man get all mushy about having a son.
