Why is it okay to call out African American musicians, but not white ones?

I was searching around a while ago for articles about misogyny and racism in music. I found a few of them and noticed a pattern. If you google "Misogyny in music" you will find a lot of links to rap and hip hop music.

Misogyny Set To Music calls out R Kelly.

Here's the Top 10 Misogynistic Rap Songs That Women Love, which calls out Lil Jon, Snoop, Yin Yang Twinz.

Chris Brown, Tyler the Creator and mostly other African American musicians are always, always getting called out.

Then, google "mindless self indulgence misogyny" and "mindless self indulgence racism" and what will you find? Nothing more than a bunch of white people defending the sexism and racism by saying it's "clearly ironic," "tongue in cheek," "Jimmy Urine says he's not a racist so obviously he's not" and "how can they be sexist with women in the band?" And my favorite, "MSI is reclaiming those social slurs."

So my question is, why is it acceptable for these white people to "reclaim slurs" and use slurs "in irony" but when an African American musician does it, there is a huge outcry?

I also notice that the people who post here are the only ones really calling out privileged white men like Frank Iero and Gerard Way on saying horribly racist and misogynistic things on Twitter. If an African American spoke like that on Twitter, what would the reaction be?

"I've been commenting here for a while and don't think any of the regulars are spiteful or mean to anyone. Everybody is given a chance to express their opinion, which can be the problem sometimes as everyone's opinion is different. It gets heated when someone comes here just to cause trouble. I've learned a lot about feminism here."

yeah, very true, anonymous person. I just don't like the trolls, and the sh*t stirrers on here, of which i've seen quite a few :/ so maybe i'll come and visit once in a while, but I don't want to get too involved lol >.<

Anonymous said...

Tell me, pie liner, do you think using racial slurs is acceptable?

Anonymous said...

Do you also think threatening to hit women is 'no big deal'?

Anonymous said...

Do you think women shouldn't shit unless it's in their own private toilet at home?

Anonymous said...

Do you think 'who cares?' about the thousands of people who died in the Japanese tsunami?

Anonymous said...

Maybe you think it's okay to joke about children being abused?

Anonymous said...

No? not any of it?

But you do think it's okay to come here and shit talk people who do have a problem with those things. That makes you a racist enabler, a sexist enabler, a misogynist enabler. Congratulations!

Anonymous said...

Can somebody please explain to me the "Profie" thing?

Anonymous said...

It's a moron with no life trying to stir trouble. Ignore them.

pie-liner said...

I never said any of those things were acceptable. read my comments again.

THIS, your comment, is exactly what I was talking about. yes, everything you mentioned is horrible, and shouldn't happen. but all I see is loadsa people taking it out on each other. like you just proved to me.

I quote myself: “ur all being spiteful and arguing with each other, which makes me sad.”

the blog posts focus on a very important topic, and I support that strongly and totally agree with what has been said. but there are some people saying “OMG so-and-so said this, he must be a racist bastard.”
not necessarily. ignorant, yes. but not racist.
and I’m a female muslim. I’m not for misogyny, racism, child abuse, or any of the other horrible things you accused me of being an ‘enabler’ of.

I’m not going to argue with you. call me whatever you want, but I know what I am, and if you want to be hurtful then ur only reinforcing my previous point. after all, there were other lovely people who managed to put thier point across without such accusatory tones.

Anonymous said...

So answer my question: do you think racial slurs are acceptable? Because Frank, Lindsey and the rest of their racist crew KNOW how offensive those terms are. Yet they continue to use them anyway. That's not ignorance, that's something deliberate and toxic.

Anonymous said...

The trolls are from a blog called its-mayonaise. They believe the owner of that blog to be Gerard Way. They think he is a close personal friend of theirs, in some cases they write to him as if they were his lovers (writing porn about him, writing Lindsey as the villain etc) and they hate the people on this blog. Once in a while they show up here, two or three of them as anons, and start trouble. A lot of the attacks on new people are from them, pretending to be "the bad guys" over here.

It's a very weird situation but once in a while they get a bee in their bonnet and love to start trouble here.

"They think he is a close personal friend of theirs, in some cases they write to him as if they were his lovers (writing porn about him, writing Lindsey as the villain etc) and they hate the people on this blog."

So are these people crazy? Like, scary, Criminal Minds erotomania episode crazy and dangerous? Because if they really think they're Gerard's lovers or whatever, that sounds like they have serious issues.

pie-liner said...

No, Mr anonymous (or ms), I do not find it acceptable at ALL. The fact that frank and gerard changed so much as to allow this to happen really disgusts and disappoints me.
And I know that they have changed, as a fan I have kept up with the band and thier happenings. And I hate lynZ, so the fact that gerard married her makes me quite wary.
There are mistakes and then there are people who have genuinely changed. MCR are examples of the latter, it would seem...
I hope this is an acceptable answer...

Anonymous said...

Like, scary, Criminal Minds erotomania episode crazy and dangerous?

I don't know how dangerous, necessarily, but there is erotomania going on. A few of them have followed them around the country )one woman quit her job to follow them everywhere) and the others just tend to write porn about them. However, when you keep in mind that they THINK THEY ARE TALKING TO THEM, the porn they write about them, they think is being accepted by them.

Two women wrote Frank a pornographic "birthday list" of the sexual things they wanted to do to him (including a strap on dildo). This was supposed to be accepted by Frank Iero himself, and by the way he was already married at the time. They believed they were saying these things to him and he was accepting of them, with such plans as they were going to cuddle on a blanket with him under the stars and discuss these things.

Another woman there writes "erotica" about Gerard, and on the Mayonaise blog, she believes she talks to him and that he is accepting of these stories. In which LynZ (various incarnations of her) are the bad guy, and she must "rescue" Gerard from this "bitch/slut."

I know they've brought them packages and sent them things too, and have tried to keep communication with them outside of the blog that they think is them.

So I don't think they are dangerous to the band, but I'm sure enough that the band's handlers are watching out for them anyway.

Anonymous said...

These are not teens, by the way, but adult women in their late 40s and early 50s.

Anonymous said...

Pie liner I'm not a fan of the band, never have been. I believe in human rights and freedom of speech. Some people here appear very passionate about what they believe in.

Anonymous said...

That sounds insane, 2:58. Do these women talk to them on their twitters too? I specifically remember one of the band members (maybe Ray or Frank) saying on twitter that if it wasn't their official twitters, it wasn't them and that they did not have personal blogs, myspaces, facebooks, etc., where they talked to fans.

I guess these women either missed this or they think their its-mayo blog is "special"?

They sound creepy to me. I wouldn't want to run into one of them in a dark alley or anything.

Anonymous said...

I used to be a big fan too, and I agree with you that the guys in the band have changed, pie-liner, but I think they just changed the way they act, not who they were inside. I think they've always been jerks; they just got tired of covering it up.

I don't blame Lindsey for it though. I don't like her band, but I really think she's just kinda too derpy to realize that some people find them offensive. I think she was just like "Oh, I get to be onstage even though I can't play anything! Cool beans, Dude! Sign me up!"

Not that it's cool to be that stupid, but I don't think she's evil or anything, and I don't think she changed Gerard. I think marrying her just gave him the courage to let his hair down and be himself.

Anonymous said...

hooray Russell Brand filed for divorce from Katy Perry, there's hope yet that in 2012 Gerard will take a hint and start running from Lyn-z like the gazelles he so greatly admires.

Anonymous said...

No 6:27, and there is nothing to cheer about when people announce a divorce.

Anonymous said...

As much as I dislike Gerard Way, I would not take pleasure in the breakup of his marriage. After all, there is a child involved. If I wish anything for him and Lindsey at all this year, it would be for them to realize that they can become better people. I'd like for Gerard to apologize to the people he has lied to and hurt, and I'd especially like to see an apology for the #smashedface and C-word incidents.

I'm not gonna hold my breath though.

^P.S.

I feel bad for Russell Brand and Katy Perry. I thought they were cute together. :(

Anonymous said...

Russell Brand and Katy Perry were a good couple, but I think her heavy schedule killed off their marriage. She went on a world tour straight after they got hitched. He's a recovering alcoholic and she wanted to party all the time. He wanted kids, she didn't. It was never going to work. Sad.

Anonymous said...

^ I couldn't agree more 6.26.

It is sad, but I think many people saw that coming a mile off.

Has anyone seen the cover of Kate Moss as Ziggy Stardust for Vogue Paris?

Anonymous said...

I've never understood the appeal of Kate Moss. My opinion of her isn't so great-especially after the cocaine scandal. She should have known better, especially with a young daughter at home.

Anonymous said...

Mind you she looks good in that pic. Bowie looked better, of course.

Kate Moss got into the model business when she was very young. That tends to fuck you up a little. The same with Naomi Campbell.

Hey everyone! I just wanted to say, I saw Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy the other night, and it was amazeballs! I totally recommend it.

Anonymous said...

It was good, wasn't it? I loved the pacing and the fact that you actually had to pay attention to know what was going on. The entire cast was excellent! I especially loved Mark Strong's Prideaux and Benedict Cumberbatch's Guillam, and of course Gary Oldman and Tom Hardy were amazing (duh).

I second your recommendation!

kapunua said...

Definitely. For as much as I love Tom Hardy, I have to say, Benedict Cumberbatch had (what I thought was) the most heartbreaking scene in the film. He did it so beautifully. I'm totally going to start watching Sherlock, I think. I loved him in Stuart, A Life Backwards. (OMG, that was him in Atonement, too! I forgot about that!)

And I loved Gary Oldman, too. This might be my favorite role that I've seen him in. Maybe aside from Rosencrantz and Guildenstern etc. :)

The whole film was so subtle. I'm not going to lie, I was sitting there a lot of the time going, "Now what the hell? Okay, you lost me again." It was hard to keep track of the names sometimes. And then once in a while I'd have a moment of, "OH! I know exactly what's going on!" And then there was the Big Reveal and I felt like my attention had paid off. The last few scenes were amazing, right? And the absolute last scene. I wanted to cheer. :D

Definitely need to see it again, and this time go, "Oooooh!" It's one of those movies that you need to see twice to appreciate, I think.

Anonymous said...

Benedict Cumberbatch is brilliant as Sherlock.

Anonymous said...

I'm definitely going to see it (TTSS) again. I think it's one of those films where you catch little nuances you missed the first time around on the second viewing.

I agree with you about Sherlock. I'm going to have to start watching it too. As for Atonement, I have to tell you a story. About halfway through the film, the girl I went with leaned over to me and said, "Oh my god! That Peter guy -- he was the Chocolate Pedo rapist in Atonement!" I nearly choked on my popcorn!

kapunua said...

Holy crap, that's right, he was the bad guy! I completely didn't even recognize him. Thinking back to Atonement, I for some reason kept picturing him as the brother.

Steven Moffat pisses me off, but I feel like he's about to get a clue (he's been knocked around with the clue-bat a few times already and it's catching up with him.) I think--I hope--he'll try to do better with female characters from now on.

So I definitely have Sherlock on my to-see list. ^_^

Benedict Cumberbatch. What a fabulous name.
Kapunua, I highly recommend Sherlock.

I have a question...
I just found out that msi were coming back for some type of reunion tour ? or something? Idk. My question is, how the hell is it possible that a band like that could return? Ok, not a big fan of the band Fall out Boy but I could understand them coming back you know what I'm saying?
But msi ??? How in the hell does this music business thing work? Anybody
know? Because I am genuinely confused.

Anonymous said...

Wow!!!! They are coming back to tour? Dear lord!!!

Anonymous said...

MSI are touring for about a month around the USA. They still have a following, however crazy that seems. I suspect the audience will consist of a few old time MSI fans, but mainly there will be the new breed of MSI fans which are basically MCR fans who hang on every word of GW. They will be wanting to get a look at the wifey, because although they are totally jealous of her, they have decided that being a fan of her also makes it less painful for them, LOL! And also there will be the possibility they get a glimpse of GW and also the kid (if either are even there). I expect the venues are pretty small, but I think there is enough interest from the fans to sustain a month long tour. Oh and Jimmy Piss is taking along his wife's band, Morningwood, for what is supposed to be their final tour. For the obsessed fangirl, this is probably quite exciting. Poor things.

Anonymous said...

It's not a major tour. It's a small one for the hardcore fans. The venues aren't big.

Anonymous said...

But weren't they kind of like a flop band? I highly doubt they have a very huge fan base and Yeah, even though the music world has gone to hell, Msi still are oddball wild cards in the industry. I want to know exactly who was involved and responsible for bringing them back? Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't there like a hundred other starving bands out there that could use those venues?
Why can't they just look for new talent?
I don't get it...

Anonymous said...

I honestly have no clue how they got booked for even one gig.

kapunua said...

But lots of crappy, talentless, racist people get booked for jobs. It's because that's the kind of society we live in. For years, a comedian named Andrew Dice Clay spread his misogyny around and he became very popular with it. Mel Gibson still gets work. Michael Richards. People still give money to Roman Polanski.

It can be argued that these people still have some talent apart from being really problematic / hateful, but honestly, talent isn't enough of a redeeming quality for some of those folks. Certainly not enough of one for me to give them my money.

When you take MSI, there's absolutely no talent there, even aside from their problematic lyrics and actions. But, of course, it can also be argued that other talentless acts have had some measure of success, also.

Anonymous said...

it's called 'teenagers buying into the hype'
also known as buying hype for your wife so she'll have 'her own career' to boast

Anonymous said...

Unless they add a lot of tour dates, they're skipping a huge part of the country. I don't see anything for the Orange Peel in Asheville or the Tabernacle in Atlanta, which are small, but very important venues. It seems they're skipping the South altogether (with the exception of Dallas). They're playing very small venues in very large towns (probably so they can boast "sellout shows"). Of course, about 80% of the people buying tickets will be there in hopes of seeing Mr. Lindsey Way or their daughter.

Anonymous said...

It seems they're skipping the South altogether

How lucky for the South.

What do you guys think of Jay-Z's recent announcement?

Jay-Z has vowed to never use derogatory terms for women in his music again following the birth of his daughter, Blue Ivy Carter.

The rapper, who welcomed his first child with wife Beyoncé last weekend, has stated in a poem to celebrate the birth of baby Blue Ivy that he will drop the use of 'b*tch' - revealing that his degradation of women in his songs "has passed."

"Before I got in the game, made a change, and got rich/ I didn't think hard about using the word b*tch/ I rapped, I flipped it, I sold it, I lived it/ Now with my daughter in this world I curse those that give it. I never realized while on the fast track that I’d give riddance to the word bitch, to leave her innocence in tact."

The hip-hop icon continued:

"No man will degrade her, or call her name. I'm so focused on your future, the degradation has passed. I wish you wealth, health and insight. Forever young you may pass. Blue Ivy Carter, my angel."

Pixie said...

So that makes everything all right then?
If the MSI morons, came out and apologised for everything they played in the past (highly unlikely)would everyone forgive them?
Don't think so!

Anonymous said...

Obviously Jay-Z had no problems degrading other peoples' daughters. But when the shoe is on the other foot...

Anonymous said...

MSI would never apologise for their offensive lyrics. They don't think they have done anything wrong. It's satire, you just don't get it, blah, blah, blah.

Anonymous said...

Really? he said that??? So what the hell happens to all the other girls he's disrespected and degraded in the music videos? Is he going to make a public statement/apology to all those women? Or are they "not quite on his wife's level" to do that sort of thing? What, because he has a daughter now that's why he's not using the word anymore? That's real cute.

I don't understand, Why does something dramatic have to happen in someone's life before they decide "Oh, yeah I gotta stop being this way because I don't want some one to mess with mine in the future." Why not come into the game with something positive? Spread the love people!!! Happy MLK day!
