Why is it okay to call out African American musicians, but not white ones?

I was searching around a while ago for articles about misogyny and racism in music. I found a few of them and noticed a pattern. If you google "Misogyny in music" you will find a lot of links to rap and hip hop music.

Misogyny Set To Music calls out R Kelly.

Here's the Top 10 Misogynistic Rap Songs That Women Love, which calls out Lil Jon, Snoop, Yin Yang Twinz.

Chris Brown, Tyler the Creator and mostly other African American musicians are always, always getting called out.

Then, google "mindless self indulgence misogyny" and "mindless self indulgence racism" and what will you find? Nothing more than a bunch of white people defending the sexism and racism by saying it's "clearly ironic," "tongue in cheek," "Jimmy Urine says he's not a racist so obviously he's not" and "how can they be sexist with women in the band?" And my favorite, "MSI is reclaiming those social slurs."

So my question is, why is it acceptable for these white people to "reclaim slurs" and use slurs "in irony" but when an African American musician does it, there is a huge outcry?

I also notice that the people who post here are the only ones really calling out privileged white men like Frank Iero and Gerard Way on saying horribly racist and misogynistic things on Twitter. If an African American spoke like that on Twitter, what would the reaction be?

What "property" did she disrespect?

The property of Elena's creative works. The property of Elena being able to fantasize about GW like some of you have fantasized about Tom Hardy, JGL, Jared Leto, Frank Iero, whomever. Fictional character or not.

She has as much right to her fantasies as you have to yours.

Elena has as much right to write Godawful fanfics about GW as Erika Dawn has to come up with a Godawful porn star name as Erika Dawn. Without all her friends coming in and pointing out how laughable and predictable a porn star wannabe name it is.

Anonymous said...

Erika Dawn. Really? Really Erika! You and your friend had a good laugh at Elena did you?

Yes. I can believe you are 15. Such an immature, unworldly 15 you are.

Anonymous said...

I bet Erika thinks that a painting of long men is hilarious. I bet she and her friend can sit and laugh about that for hours.

Never realizing what fools they were making of themselves until someone points out to them that it's long dong that is funny. Not long men.

Erika Dawn I think you're a kid and little kids shouldn't speak unless spoken to. Why don't you try and write or create something? I reckon we'd laugh harder at your work then you did at Elena's.

Kapunua only welcomed her 'cause Erika seems as rude as she is. Like attracts like right?

I watched that JGL thing he looks stoned, he probably is. He's still very sweet looking though. I liked him in 10 Things I Hate About You.

Why? Seen and not heard and speaking unless spoken to are practices that have been around for generations. Otherwise you have unruly children who run around and make noise (yes I get they're children but there's a time and a place) and interrupt adults when they're speaking because they lack basic manners. I hope you're not a parent.

Yes, and so are beating and sending children to bed without dinner, neither of which is good parenting.

I am a parent, in fact, and my children are intelligent, well-behaved, and well-adjusted. They do well in school (one in University, one in middle school). And both of them like me. I seriously doubt your kids could say the same.

Wow,sometimes adults think teen stuff is stupid and forget what it was to be young and dont even bother to get to know a teen. Just remember you were a teen once too and they shouldn't be looked down on because of their age.Sometimes i think adults look down on teens expecting them to know everything about life, when the only way to know is living it and making mistakes on the way like we did.

Anonymous said...

Don't be silly I'm not enamoured and I don't want/expect Ericka to be. I just don't think people should knock other people's creativity, no matter what it is when they have nothing to show for themselves.

Why would my butt hurt??

Anonymous said...

Hello Lynn

No I wasn't looking down on her beacause she was a teen but because she was just plain rude. We actually don't even know if she is a teen but she should be a little bit more respectful to her elders (if she is younger than us) I called her a kid because little kids are yet to be taught how to behave whereas teenagers should already know manners. I can honestly say I haven't forgotten what its like to be a teen. Hell I come on here often enough and this place is just like a playground.

In fact to Ericka I apologise if you think I'm knocking you 'cause you're young. I'm not. Because I thought you were rude about someone's work, yes but not for your age.

kapunua said...

That is such nonsense. "Elders" have to earn respect. No one should be expected to grant respect based merely on age.

Lynn said...

Erika Dawn, you should not be welcomed. You should be given a time out in the corner with a dunce cap on your head. Where you can sit and think about the error or your ways and see how much you like being pointed and laughed at.

Are you the same person that wrote this? Seems like you don't tolerate teens very much.I don't think putting a dunce cap is the way to teach a teen.

Anonymous said...

Frankly, I don't blame Mayo for deleting that awful shit. I'd delete it too, paranoid delusional anon.

I know people try to make us out to be the DEVIL over there, but I don't think the regs from here posted Elena's fic. The troll who posted that shit just came here and posted it to make us look more like the 'enemy'. The stupid mind games they play on that blog are ridiculous.

Anonymous said...

Wondering if it would be so bad if VV stopped Anons from posting. Wouldn't that be a solution to the troll who keeps posting on both sites??

Anonymous said...

I've said many times that I would get a blogger if she did, but VV doesn't want to discourage people from participating here.

I do wish we could ban any Mayo talk from here though. I think it only causes trouble. I personally do not care one iota about that place. I think Mayo is a fraud and the people who post there don't interest me at all.

Anonymous said...

The Mayo talk is boring and just brings trouble, IMO.

Anonymous said...

I agree, 11:35. Whenever someone brings up the dreaded M-word, you can bet that crazy trolling will soon follow. It's so obvious.

I never frequented Mayo's. I don't know those people and don't care to, and I don't know what they have to do with MCR/MSI or any of the issues we talk about here.

Anonymous said...

I think it's appropriate to discuss the people at Mayo's when you're talking about crazy fangirls of a certain sort. I don't comment there, but obviously the people who do are really hooked on the band in a dangerous way. It's easy enough to tell from the comments.

Now for instance this Elena. Obviously she presents herself as sympathetic to Lindsey, right? And now it comes out that when they first got engaged, she wrote a few hundred chapters of anti-Lindsey pornography about Gerard.

I would never ever think about calling Lindsey a pig, a whore, a bitch, or anything. Even though that is exactly what Lindsey and her band call the rest of us women on a regular basis. I would not lower myself to their level.

Elena for all her pretend kindness and support actually has much more hateful and misogynistic thoughts towards Gerard's wife than we will ever have here.

Anonymous said...

Please! some of you on here are just plain vicious and more rude, and anit- lyndsey then Elena could ever be with her fan fic. Go back and read some of the comments left by anons on here about lyndsey they're hideous and I don't even like her but I can say that they're too much!

Welshie said...

Greetings one and all, Welshie here. Listen, as you may or may not know I post at Mayo's. I don't go there for any attention from Mayo cos quite simply he's never shown a blind bit of interest in me. That's ok. I ain't bovvered. I post there simply cos I enjoy chatting with some really nice and friendly people.
Anyway what I want to say is this; I can guarantee you that I am no crazy fangirl. I've never been a huge fan of MCR, I just sorta liked a few of their songs. I've never seen them live and don't intend to in the future. I very quickly got fed up of their juvenile shenanigans, especially Gerard, and no longer regard myself a fan of theirs. As for Lindsey? I know nothing about the girl so it would be unfair of me to pass judgement on her.

That's all. I'll go now. Ta ra.

Anonymous said...

Go back and read some of the comments left by anons on here about lyndsey they're hideous and I don't even like her but I can say that they're too much!

Not everyone here hates Lindsey. I've said many times that I don't blame Gerard's shenanigans on her. He's a grown man and he's responsible for his own choices.

I don't like MSI, but I have nothing against Lindsey personally.

But, when fans call Lindsey a bitch and a ho in a fanfic, then turn around and suck up to her on twitter, that's just way out of line.

Anonymous said...

Most people here don't call Lindsey names, especially names like bitch and ho.

Anonymous said...

Contrary to popular belief, this is not a "hate" blog. We don't "hate" Lindsey. We leave that to the fans who want to get into Gerard's pants.

Anonymous said...

The footage of the way Gadaffi was treated is quite disturbing.

kapunua said...

Hiya Welshie! How are you? Hope all is well.

Oh man, the Gadaffi footage truly was disturbing. Must agree.

As far as hating and name-calling. I hate, hate, hate the things that MCR/MSI say and do to women and minorities. I think their words and actions are beyond scummy and I think that as a whole they are gross people.

However, I can't see myself writing horrible stories about them. (Shoot, they do enough damage themselves. They're just plain embarrassing.) Well, I can't see myself writing stories about real people in the first place; we all know where I stand on that. I think it's creepy, and why would I do such a thing to someone I claimed to admire? I will never get it.

I call my friends some pretty vile names in jest sometimes, "you are such a ho-bag" etc. and they do the same to me. But it's with the knowledge that none of us actually mean any of it. I'd never suggest a woman was a "pig" or "whore" or whatever for marrying some man I happen to like.

Shoots, my number one crush is Tom Hardy, I'm mad jealous of Charlotte! But I also think she's gorgeous, and they seem pretty smitten with each other. (Thankfully, they can be smitten without acting ridiculous and vile, and denigrating other women.)

kapunua said...

I should also say, this is not a defense of Lindsey. She preaches about stopping "girl on girl hate" but she is one of the biggest proponents of misogyny, so hey. I could not care less who shames her. I don't really care when bad things happen to bad people.

Nasty RPFs count as a "bad thing" though, and I'd never be the one doing that to someone I claimed to admire.

Anonymous said...

Elena for all her pretend kindness and support actually has much more hateful and misogynistic thoughts towards Gerard's wife than we will ever have here.

Exactly. She has proven herself to be a hypocrite of the worst sort.

We may dislike Lindsey here (and I say dislike, not "hate"), but I think it's safe to say that none of us have tried to suck up to Lindsey on twitter in an effort to get close to Gerard either. That's just sick.

I think it's going to be a tough road for all the Presidential hopefuls in 2012. It would be very hard for the Democratic Party to run anyone other than a sitting President on its ticket, so I imagine it Obama will be the Democratic nom.

And who are the GOP offering? Crazies like Herman Cain and his "Bootstraps" theories, Rick Perry the racist, Michele Bachmann and her "Pray the gay away" Christian fundamentalist beliefs, etc. Mitt Romney has a decent chance, but now the Religious Right loons are pulling the "he's not a true follower of Christ" crap with him, because he's a Mormon. I can't see that any of these clowns has a snowball's chance in hell.

Add to all of this the Occupy Wall Street movement, which keeps gaining ground daily, and the 2012 elections are just too tough to even hazard a guess about right now.

There used to be two girls who wrote fan fiction, and made it very clear that they were only using the band members names so people would read their work. A friend sent me their stories and all I could think was, why are these girls not sending this shit to publishers. One was a story completely set in Germany during world war 2 (not based on the goy video) and the other was a story about a mafia family in the 30's. i cant for the life of me remember their pen names.

Anyway my point is that not all fanfiction is porn and some people, like these writers were just desperate for people to read their stories, and i guess as MCR fans they knew they would have a readership. They did not write about them as real people but fictional characters in their own right. Some of these people are insanely talented. That MCRmy wife person not being one of them.

kapunua said...

But that is still exploitative.

Anonymous said...

I don't think so. It's no different than people writing novels featuring real people. Take Stephen King's new novel, its all about the JFK assassination. It features real people placed inside a fictional setting. I can see where writing about incest and slash is exploitative, particularly when there is no clarity that it is fiction with characters who only bare a physical likeness to real people.

As a writer yourself, are you going to say that none of your characters have ever been inspired by real people, or bare a resemblance to real people in your head when you're writing it? I see no difference with what some fan fiction writers do versus what many published writers do. Not all fan fiction can be lumped into the porn/slash/Mary Sue category. Some of these writers are extremely talented and simply want their stories to be read.

Anonymous said...

She's not going to take you seriously because you spelled "bear" wrong.

Anonymous said...

Seriously? You are going to discount her argument because she spelled the word wrong? I hate fan fiction and I think she made a compelling argument.

kapunua said...

Of course some of my characters are based on real people, but I don't use their names. JFK is long dead, and yes, while he still has family living, Stephen King is using true events in his story (the assassination that could not possibly get any more well-known than it already is.) It's not like it's going to reopen any wounds or anything.

Using pop stars/real people who are currently living and putting them into situations that didn't happen, without their permission, is exploitative. Yes, there's a difference between slash/porn/MarySue nonsense and good writing, but that line is way too nebulous. Some fics are obviously really terrible (we don't even have to discuss that anymore, because it's clear,) and some are better quality, but it's still RPF and I'm never not going to find that exploitative.

Especially when you're telling me that your friend used the names on purpose to gain attention for her "original" story. That's the definition of exploitation.

Again, don't get me wrong: IDGAF what happens to MCR. I don't care that they and their fans have a mutually disrespectful relationship. That's between them. But it still doesn't change how I feel about RPF.

kapunua said...

I also want to say that I like fanfiction - but there are lines that I don't cross, and using real people is one of the biggest ones.

Anonymous said...

No, I doubt Kapunua or anyone else will discount your argument just because you spelled "bear" wrong. It's a common mistake, and your writing is not riddled with errors.

However, I personally am going to disagree with you on the basis of your content.

I write, and I completely understand the need to get your stories read. When I was younger, and I needed a confidence boost, I wrote fanfic for a while. I even wrote a couple of MCR fics, one which came to be very well known. But I always felt uncomfortable writing about real people, and after while, I came to realize that the only reason people were reading my stories was because of MCR. It didn't matter how good my stories were, the people were there for the band. So I stopped and began to write exclusively original characters.

As for basing original characters on real life people, of course I do that. Many of my characters are amalgamations of real people. Others are not. But, that's not the same thing as using a famous person's name just to get your story read.

8:41 said...

^And blogger is an asshole. It posted my comment when I hit "preview".

Yes, I left out a couple of commas and the word "a", but all writers do that. But good ones will read, re-read, and then send to a Beta reader before they actually publish a story. Published authors have editors to do that for them.

Anyway, I also wanted to add that I think using a "brand", be it a band member or already established characters to get your stories read is like cheating. It isn't really a good measure of your writing ability. For the most part, it's just an ego boost.

8:41 said...

Oh hey, Kapunua. I didn't see your comment before I posted mine. I just wanted to say I agree with everything you said. As somebody who wrote RPF for a short time, I was completely squicked the entire time I was doing it, and I would take it back if I could. But hey, live and learn. :)

Anonymous said...

IDGAF what happens to MCR. I don't care that they and their fans have a mutually disrespectful relationship.

That is so true isn't it? MCR and their fans do have a mutually disrespectful relationship.

Fans who defend MCR porn fic say the stupidest things when they defend it. Like "Oh you know they don't really mind it. They're just saying they don't like it to save face. They find it flattering, blah, blah". It reminds me of things men say to justify rape. "You know she wanted it. She was just asking for it, etc".

I can't believe you just compared rape to some fangirl writing fanfic. That is totally uncalled for, offensive and belittling of the actual trama to victims of rape, and ridiculous use of hyperbole to make your point.

Anonymous said...

I don't think the anon was comparing fic to rape. I think the comment was just to show how fans disrespect MCR and how they objectify them.

Anonymous said...

I think if someone wrote a porno story about me, I would feel quite violated. It's not the same thing as rape, but it's definitely a violation, and the fact that fans use such pathetic excuses to justify it shows complete disrespect for the members of MCR as people.

October 29, 2011 9:29 AM said...

It wasn't my intention to compare fics to rape. They aren't the same thing, and if anyone was offended, I am sorry.

I was trying to make the point that the writers of these fics very often act like they have access to what these people really want and really think. If someone tells me "I don't like this, and I don't want you to do it", I'm going to take that at face value. I'm not going to make an assumption that I know better than they do what they want or feel. That's more than disrespect, it's almost like ownership, and it goes way over the line of what is acceptable behavior.

Have any of you ever stopped to consider that maybe MCR is so disrespectful of their fans because their fans are so disrespectful of them?

I can remember when MCR talked with great respect about and to their fans. That changed after fans were so awful to Jamia, Alicia, Eliza, and then Lindsey. Also, there were those incidents where they were stalked and harassed at airports, and the incident where some fan threw an animal heart onstage. Then you have that horrible fanfic where all of the guys are either having sex with one another or with the fan in Mary Sue form, and all the morons yelling they want to have Frank and Gerard's babies.

I don't blame MCR for losing respect for their fans.

P.S. to 1:01: I don't believe for one minute that Mayo is Gerard. Gerard would not know that Elena woman from any other unhappy housewife who stalks around after the band.

Anonymous said...

I have to say that constantly talking about MCR or their dull wives is repetitive and boring. They don't contribute anything interesting and are not very intelligent from what I've observed.

I think a much better ratio would be to dedicate only 2% of talk to mind-numbing stuff (like MCR or one thick wife).

Oh, I've only seen River Song in the two library episodes as yet, and I really liked her so far! I think she's gorgeous.

Anonymous said...

I love Alex Kingston, and agree that she's gorgeous, but I don't like River Song either. Most Doctor Who fans either love her or hate her with nothing in between.

My favorite Doctors were Four and Nine, btw. :D

Anonymous said...

Matt Smith's Doctor is very bland and Moffat's plot lines are ridiculously sexist. River Song was a great character right up until this season.

I really miss Tennant ;_;

I don't like the new storylines, but I think Matt is great. I like a doctor who's quirky. To me, David Tennant was too ordinary-looking and not quirky enough. Also, I did not like the implied romancey-ness between Rose and the doctor. I'm probably in the minority here, but dif'rent strokes and all that, I suppose.

Ray Toro needs to take a good long look in the mirror before he starts insulting other people based on their looks.

Anonymous said...

Toro like to tell women what they should and shouldn't do.

kapunua said...

DId that ahole just call women "bags?" WTF is wrong with him?

Oh, Dr. Who fans, lemme agree with you on this. I loathe Moffat. He's a good writer and he did some good episodes, but he's said some really crappy things, and he can't write women for beans.

Pixie said...

I don't like Matt Smith as the Doctor, and his sidekick Amy Pond, is awful! Rumours are that the next series will be Smith's last, bring back Tennant!

Anonymous said...

MCR have never made me feel disrespected. Not once.

Anonymous said...

^Can't say the same thing about the people who post at this blog. Most of regular posters disrespect other people on a daily basis. Especially MCR fans.

Anonymous said...

the reason I hate Matt smith's Doctor is precisely that he's not quirky. He lacks expression and most of his 'quirks' are really just hipster-like imitations of being an old man. Tennant was *weird* and funny, even when he was being angry. Mostly he could actually act.

Anonymous said...

Lol. Good thing you aren't a "bag" in a slutty Bee costume, 1:05.

I disagree.

Anonymous said...

I also don't think writing fics about the band members is disrespecting them. I would think they would find it very flattering.

Anonymous said...

Then why don't you go write some and present it to them?

Anonymous said...

I am a massive Doctor Who fan. I loved the 9th Doctor, and was gutted to see him go so soon. But then along came David Tennant's 10th Doctor, and he surpassed all expectations. I still miss him. However, the 11th Doctor has grown on me as time has gone on. He will never be my favourite, but he holds his own, I think.

Some of my favourite episodes from previous series were written by Steven Moffat (The Empty Child, Blink) and he started off very well with the 11th Doctor. It all got a bit crazy towards the end of this series.

I am not a fan of the characters Amy Pond (plain annoying) or Rory (plain nothing). But I have always liked River Song. Each to their own I guess.

Anonymous said...

I also don't think writing fics about the band members is disrespecting them. I would think they would find it very flattering.

Oh wait. Let me guess. Mikey was just lying when he said fanfic about them was vile. He really adores it and reads it in his spare time. And you know this because you and Charles Xavier share the same "groovy mutation".

*rolls eyes*

I disagree with that comment. There are lines that should not be crossed. Family, lifelong friends, pets and sex amoung band members should be left out of fanfic.

1:09 anon said...

I would think they would find it very flattering.

Compliments such as you look nice today, you're pretty, you're cute, you're attractive, you're sexy, you're talented, you're hot, i like you, i'll pay you 20$ to watch you eat that hot dog, marry me are flattering. Most fanfic is just sick. Most. Not all.

kapunua said...

Pixie (and other fans who might know the answer to this:) How can Matt Smith leave/be replaced? I've read around the internet that Time Lords get 12 regenerations, and even though Matt Smith is Eleven, technically he's the twelfth. How would they get around that?

Anonymous said...

How would they get around that?

I think they can pretty much get around anything if they so want to. Originally there were only meant to be 9 Doctors, I think? The writers seem to have a pretty free rein with things like that. And because we love it so much, we only question it with smiles on our faces. Because we want it to go on forever!

Anonymous said...

I agree that they can find a way to get around any limitations; it is science fiction after all. "Wibbly wobbly timey-wimey."

I just have to add that as a longtime Doctor Who fan(atic), I don't understand the Matt Smith hate any more than I understood the David Tennant adoration. I love them both. Each brought uniquely different characteristics to The Doctor, as have all the others who preceded them. I personally liked Christopher Eccleston the most, but I respect that other people have their own favorite Doctor. That's the way it should be, and all of the "bring back David Tennant" whinging is a bit of a blight on the fandom.

Just my opinion.

Pixie said...

I think this final (UK) series, I don't know where you are up to in US, was poor. There were a couple of good episodes, but it mainly concentrated on the Dr/Amy/Rory "relationship" rather than stories and aliens. I'm a slithereen and Dalek fan myself! Oh and Oods!

Chris Cornell and My Chemical Romance rock Voodoo Festival
Decked out in their Halloween costumes, Gerard Way was in charismatic form despite the freezing cold, urging the crowd to sing along with them a sthey belted out their hits. Since MCR is a bit more current they seemed in touch with the crowd. Soundgarden, meanwhile, took some time to find their groove, perhaps as a result of not being together for a while.

I think it should go on forever, too! And, oh, I LOVED Eccleston. I've loved him since I saw him in Shallow Grave in '95. I thought he was a great Doctor. Love the Daleks, too, though honestly I can't even find them intimidating. They're just so cute with their little blinking ears and their plungers. And when the Doctor chastises them, their little eye-stalks droop and they look sad.

Anonymous said...

ugh geetard's band of merry hangers-on are all huddled together on a live chat being clueless and making dead steve jobs jokes...

Anonymous said...

I liked Shallow Grave. The humor is kind of dark and bleak, and there were times I thought omg but overall I enjoyed the movie. I also liked Trainspotting although that movie thoroughly made me cringe, especially the part with the bed sheet. The scene with the baby also affected me. Apart from all that I loved Ewan in both of those movies.

MSI is going on tour in 2012. This should be intresting.

Anonymous said...

I think Gerard will make a precious Mr. Mom while Lyndsey's on tour with MSI.

kapunua said...

Yup, I totally just hung out and talked with Sean Lennon and JGL. :D JGL is as gracious and lovely and sweet as he seems, and really, really pretty in person. We talked about Halloween and he really enjoyed my costume. He also put my video in his show. He closed the show with THRILLER! It was amazing. ^_^

Anonymous said...

I'm glad you had a good time Kapunua. What did you talk to Sean about?

Anonymous said...

MSI is going on tour in 2012. This should be intresting.

I thought it was very predictable. I can almost see JU do the GW thing with big sweeping speeches about feminism and homophobia. Why they may even resurrect Panty Shot and make it a big statement against child abuse.

Anonymous said...

That should make the flabby feminist friend proud.

kapunua said...

Not much, Nonnie. I thanked him for his performance and said it was great, and then his friend borrowed my phone and said "you're such a sweetheart!"

I talked with Joe for a bit longer though. We spoke about Halloween and about how the entire city of NY was a performance, and he asked me to film a few things if I got a chance, so they could go on HR. So I did. ^_^ He said he hoped someone got good videos of my costume (they didn't, oh well.) He totally recognized me too, because I didn't know it was him at first and he was like, "Oh, JulesKD! And some unpronounceable name on Twitter, too."

Also he's weirdly hot in drag. O_O

kapunua said...

Oh, I remember what else! He said, "You were talking about chocolate," and I was like, "WHAT? When was this?" And he said, "No, I know it was you, and we played it at the LA show, love and chocolate!" Then I remembered that bit I did about how love was like chocolate and someone had told me that had made it onto the screen in LA. How the eff does he remember something I did that I didn't even remember? O_O

Are we going to have to hear about this for the rest of the year now? And how is this any different from how Elena feels about Gerard? How can you judge her when you admit to being a fangirl yourself?

Anonymous said...

And how is this any different from how Elena feels about Gerard?

It's not. A fangirl is a fangirl is a fangirl.

Anonymous said...

I find the word fangirl offensive and sexist. I never read anyone using fanboy in such derogatory terms.

Please stop the gender based mocking. The PC term is fan person.

Anonymous said...

You smiling moron. Go back to Mayo's and keep on crawling up his butt.

Anonymous said...

When Kapunua starts writing fic about helping JGL get over his dead grandma by cheating on his "bitch ho" girlfriend with him (while sucking up to said girlfriend on twitter) and making him "cum", then you can put her on par with Elena. Not before then.

Anonymous said...

I wonder how Elena would feel if her husband was writing fic about fucking Angelina Jolie (or whoever he has a fanboy crush on) for the whole world to see? I wonder how her daughters would feel about reading a thinly veiled version of their dad boning some celebrity?

For that matter, I wonder how her daughters feel, knowing she writes fic about how she wants to make Gerard Way "cum"?

The whole situation is just so squick-tastic. I can't even.

Anonymous said...

Go back to Mayo's and keep on crawling up his butt."

I can't. I'm busy crawling up JGL's average joe butt at HR right now.

Anonymous said...

Good for you. You developed some taste.

Anonymous said...

pictures of JGL in drag, please!

kapunua said...

Well, the big difference is that I treat people I like with respect, and I'd never do anything like write porn about him. No matter how pretty he looks in drag. He's an actual person, you see. So please don't accuse me of stooping to those levels, because I never would. Enjoying someone's work, going to their shows, thinking they're awesome and getting to meet them, DOES NOT EQUAL fangirl.

Anonymous said...

Pics or it didn't happen.

kapunua said...

I didn't ask Joe for a pic. Not because I was too cool to or anything, but because he was clearly in a hurry, but he and his producer were totally nice enough to stop and talk with me for a good few minutes in the middle of the sidewalk. Also because I was shy and also because I didn't want my picture taken at the moment. I did give him some crow feathers stuck in with some fake purple flowers though, which he was pleased about and it was all in all very nice and mellow.

Didn't Kapunua PAY to see Joseph Gordon Levitt's show? Or are we supposed to believe that he invited her in for free along with the other bullshit?

Anonymous said...

Okay, was Geetard's mike turned way down or what? I could hear him when he was talking, but when he started singing, it just sounded like static. He still can't sing at all.

Anonymous said...

what other bullshit? i happen to believe kapunua's story.

Anonymous said...

I don't recall Kapunua saying she got into the hitRECOrd event for free. Why would she?

Is that the only thing you got to defend Gerard's crap live performance? At least the hitRECord thing was probably entertaining. Watching Gerard Way lick his hand and make a lame attempt to sing a bad song? Not so much.

Anonymous said...

i agree, he can't sing. that was a bad performance.

Anonymous said...

he's not singing at all at that part. he just sort of sits there like he's too wasted to remember the words.

Anonymous said...

also, if you listen closely, there's a backing track from the album playing

Anonymous said...

He sure looked tanked. Takes you back to PR.

Anonymous said...

Don't think he was the only one.

Anonymous said...

Gerard just needs to give it up and start lip syncing to a pre-recorded, autotuned track, like Britney Spears does. He's not fooling anyone except the fangirls who can't hear him over their own screaming. He just can not sing.

kapunua said...

I agree on all counts; he was never a great singer and I hate it when bands use backing tracks. However, no one at the shows ever seems to gaf. :/

Anonymous said...

The performance wasn't bad. The audio on the recording is what's bad.

According to all the reviews I read MCR knocked it out of the park at Voodoo Festival. Some even say MCR was better than Soundgarden.

Anonymous said...

I wonder how Chris Cornell feels about that.

Anonymous said...

It depends on which reviews you read. I've read lots of reviews that barely even mention MCR, while they go on and on about Blink, Soundgarden and The Raconteurs.

The only really positive things people say about MCR is that they got the crowd going -- mainly because they have a lot of loud, screamy fans.

Anonymous said...

From nola.com:

The best band costume this year was My Chemical Romance on Friday. MCR rocked a medieval theme. Singer Gerard Way sported faux-chain mail. (At least one observer wondered if this was a costume, or the Goth-minded Way’s normal stage attire.) The keyboardist dressed as a king.

Next time, they might spend more time fine-tuning their sound. The muddy mix during My Chemical Romance’s set on the main stage was particularly unkind; Way’s vocals were buried. He and his cohorts raged against the machine in a set that suffered from the limitations of the band’s catalog. A final “The Black Parade” indicated what they might be capable of if the rest of the catalog lived up to that higher standard.

Anonymous said...

I agree. You're lucky if you can find a review that even mentions MCR. Most just talk about Snoop Dog, Soundgarden and the Raconteurs.

From Rolling Stone re Voodoo Fest:

Once again frontman Chris Cornell remains renaissance handsome and in possession of an acrobatic vocal range, but was in many respects upstaged by bassist Ben Shepherd, whose imposing frame, sinister swagger, and effortless execution of the elephantine-heavy bass lines made renditions of fan favorites "Outshined" and "Loud Love" quake with angular menace. Their nearly two-hour set hit all the requisite highlights, including "Spoonman" and "Black Hole Sun," and closed with the two-pronged encore of "Beyond the Wheel" and "Slaves and Bulldozers."
Link.

No mention of MCR.

Anonymous said...

I'm so jealous of anyone who got to see Soundgarden at that show. I've read so many good reviews.

Chris Cornell has the most amazing voice. I know he's had some vocal problems in the past, but from everything I've read, his voice is back and it's healthy now.

I saw him years ago at Lollapalooza with Audioslave, and he gave me chills. Henry Rollins once said that Chris could "peel the paint off the walls" with his voice. So glad to hear that his voice is back in good form again. :D

kapunua said...

Also totally jealous of anyone getting to see Soundgarden. I missed them last time they came out here because I had to work. :/

And just today, I wrote a piece on feminism in the arts, mentioning how I had walked away from certain acts I used to like when they revealed their misogyny, and I said how glad I was that HitRECord had taken a feminist approach to so much of their work. And guess what? Joe featured it on the front page. ^_^

And he also gave hearts to my 13 minute recap of the show and he commented on it. :)

HR is a good place to be a feminist.
