It's really hard to define this blog sometimes. My investment in MCR is over and has been over for years now. But I like the people on this blog and I like that there is a place for you to come and vent about anything. There is not much to report on a band no one really holds an interest in any more. But some people are just realizing the disappointment.
And for the people who have been here since the beginning, it is still a good place to laugh at people who let you down and turned into, well kind of like the end of "The Wall." The best thing to do is keep laughing.
Another thing I like is all the feminist links, thoughts, rants etc that go on here. Fighting against misogyny is empowering... isn't it?
I guess what I'm saying is this blog has evolved and is not restricted to talking about a washed up bunch of confused, testosterone driven man-children and we can discuss anything we want. Have a link on feminism or civil rights, or just want to rant.... Feel free!

Thom Yorke of Radiohead said recently in an interview that the music industry is on the verge of collapse. Do you think he's right?
Obviously, record sales have declined significantly the past few years and people seem to be fed up with labels like Warner.
What do you guys think? Are you likely to buy CDs directly from artists on their own websites? Do you think that music will benefit or suffer without traditional recording contracts and corporate sponsorship?

i think in the coming years, unless you're a huge pop star like beyonce or lady gaga or even a big rock act like nickelback, there will be literally no money in record sales. musicians will have to rely on live performances, meaning having to tour or perform full time. just my thoughts.
I think the only rock bands who will survive and thrive are acts who can churn out albums quickly and remain in the public eye.
Bands like Kings of Leon who are able to take off only six months or so before hitting the road again with new material will probably do well. They write new songs on tour and only spent three months this year in the studio recording their upcoming album which will probably be released before MCR's.
People seem to have ridiculously short attention spans these days. They want instant gratification and aren't happy to wait around for a band to take two years to make a new record.
Most of the music I listen to now is Indie, so I don't have a problem with the music industry going bust. I rely a lot on word of mouth recommendations and downloads from friends to find new music.
I will definitely buy directly from the artists. I don't like giving my money to douchebags like Warner and the trained monkeys they try to pass off as musicians.

I don't have much to say regarding Lady Gaga, mainly because I tend to avoid pop music. Maybe I'll give her a listen?
Just because they can churn albums out quickly, doesn't make the album or band better than a band that takes their sweet-ass time. I agree the quicker bands are more in the spotlight, certainly. But quick or slow isn't the best method to measure who is worthy or better. It's the music. I guess we'll have to wait and see with MCR.
I think bands can overthink what they're doing, which usually results in music that's pretentious and overblown.
Some bands are just more talented than others and can write songs quickly. Also, they don't make use of autotune and a lot of studio tricks to enhance their sound (which adds time, plus makes it harder to duplicate live).
KOL has always been the kind of band that writes songs on the road and they track them live in the studio. The fact that they sound just as good or even better live as they do on their records is a definite plus for them. You can't say the same for MCR.
From 1962-1970, The Beatles released 12 studio albums, 13 EPs, and 22 singles. They were extremely prolific, and I don't think anyone will argue that they were churning out crap.
Bands today are spoiled and lazy if you ask me.
I think where MCR made their big mistake was in thinking that TBP was such an 'epic' album that they could tour on it for three years. Gerard actually said that's what he wanted to do. He also said that he wanted to release six singles from it and made videos for them all.
He felt that TBP was their defining work...and then for some reason he changed his mind. Now he seems to regret the record completely.
At this point, I don't think they know who or what they are, and that's why this record is taking so long. They've probably scrapped dozens of songs at this point.
This is the kind of thing that kills a band.

I always pay for downloads. I am in my late 20's and working, so I can afford it. If I were a teenager with not much money, maybe I wouldn't.

I've only bought maybe 2 CDs from record labels this year and both of them have been by bands that I really love and want to support.

I was trying to point out that The Beatles were very prolific, putting out more than an album a year during the short time they were together and that nobody could say that the quantity of their music affected the quality. In fact, the reverse was true. I love everything they did.
Truly talented musicians are always writing and creating. The best music comes naturally and is not forced or overworked like MCR seems to be doing on this new record.

I also don't agree that "taking their time" is a valid argument for "it must be good," because like with anything else, it all comes down to the skill of the people involved.
Some bands can work for years on an album and it'll still suck. Some musicians can sit down for five minutes and create something beautiful.
I get that there is a lot of production involved with making music these days, which there never was back before the 80s, it seems.
The point of the matter, for me anyway, is that a crap band like MCR could pound out an album in a month and I would not buy it. They could spend years creating a "masterpiece" and I still would not buy it.
And what it comes down to in that case is how overproduced, disingenuous and fake it's going to be, and the fact that I can't separate the "art" from the "artist" when it comes to misogyny, homophobia and racism. Mostly the last part.

As a graduate student, you will learn that you certainly can't diagnose people without having met them.
