i agree.. there are very few artists/bands who can sustain touring for 2 years.
I really wish Green Day hadn't toured for forever on AMerican Idiot. by the time that Jesus of Suburbia and St. Jimmy came out as singles everyone was tired of them.
Coldplay didn't last that well either, and Pink's been on the Funhouse tour for how long now?most albums aren't meant for touring two years on
I agree that two years is too long to tour on one album. I can kind of understand it with Green Day and American Idiot because that record was so huge, but TBP was nowhere near it in terms of popularity.
The smart thing to do would have been to leave the fans wanting more. Then they could have gone back into the studio and come out with a less elaborate stage show and maybe made some money.
What I don't get is why they were in the studio for so long with this record. Doesn't studio time cost a lot of money? You'd think they would have gone in with their songs mostly written.
I just don't get these guys. It's like they're just fumbling around in the dark with no direction at all.
I guess that's what happens when you fire the person who was managing all your business because he believed in the band, not because he wanted to fatten-up a cash cow.
I seriously think getting rid of Brian will be one of the reasons this new album fails. We get that bands change, but you don't go around trashing everything you've put out and the fans hold love for.
the funny thing is even though somehow there are still enough fans there to try and participate in this thing, they still havent picked one even thought they said theyd do it once a week.
mcr is once again nothing more than a bunch of liars who now that theyre married could give two shits about their fans.
last month there was a bunch activity too, as though they were scrambling to try and fix the situation but that was probably just so the fans wouldnt bitch over the constant cancellations.
yeah, mcr is dead, and im ruling it suicide.
maybe ill go listen to "to the end" for a good last laugh.
Yeah, I found it so strange that after a flurry of press we got neither an album release date, or any shows. I get that it's possibly because the label wants to wait for Gerard's voice to repair before they start doing real promo (i.e. playing live on the music press circut) before they bother getting the album out, but come on. It's funny how after every round of repetitive 'exclusive interviews' all we get from the offical website are commands to buy more shitty merch for albums the band have recently condemned.
Coldplay didn't last that well either, and Pink's been on the Funhouse tour for how long now?most albums aren't meant for touring two years on
I think Muse are pretty good at doing their thing, and knowing when to stop touring. (And they have toured a hell of a lot). And then they go into the studio and write and produce their latest album (all by themselves). Pretty impressive. Also they never ever big up how great they are, ever. That's pretty cool.
They think that by being 'badass' and creating that kind of distance they can appeal to the wider music buying public. They know they need to shake off the associations with a dying Emo culture, but unfortunantly, they're doing it in the worst way possible. Rather than letting the music speak for itself, they're actually performing a kind of commercial suicide.
Bryar's probably still butthurt about his dead dog. I guess that's what happens when you spend your rawkstar dollars on 'Hollywood's Dog Trainer To The Stars' so you can brag about it to your friends.
i understand that there needs to be some 'mystery' to rockstars, however GW seems to have done it wrongly.
Agreed. Gerard can't go from laying his whole life out like an open book (albeit one that was mostly fiction) to suddenly becoming the mysterious, reclusive rock star. It doesn't work that way.
I think they really struggled with writing this new record. Also bearing in mind they struggled with touring before that. There must have been some panic running through their veins. But they were aware enough to realize that after Japan, they needed to re-write their songs. That's a big admission, but atleast they did it. How good those songs are gonna be? Fuck knows.
Now they have started off promoting this album and Gerard's vocal problems have fucked the whole progress of it up. The question is, is that really just an excuse? Or is it an exaggerated problem? Is something very wrong with him, or is it a problem with the record?
I find it quite confusing. I'm wondering whether they are creating this non-speaking confusion to create chat about what is going on, or do they really not know what is going on?
Now they have started off promoting this album and Gerard's vocal problems have fucked the whole progress of it up. The question is, is that really just an excuse? Or is it an exaggerated problem? Is something very wrong with him, or is it a problem with the record?
Honestly, I'm thinking it could be both.
I think the record company and possibly the band realized how much this record sucked so they went back to the drawing board. At the same time, I also think it's a possibility that somebody finally heard Gerard's vocals over the fans' screaming and realized how shitty they truly are and that he couldn't continue to fool fans forever.
So maybe they're rewriting songs and getting him a voice coach.
If you listen to all the new stuff from the Roxy shows, you can tell it's all been written in a 'talk-sing' sytle. Gerard's just slurring words over the music, which is what he had been reduced to doing at the end of the last tour. I don't think they're going to bother trying to make him anything special with vocal training, but probably work on his breathing a little.
I get that it's possibly because the label wants to wait for Gerard's voice to repair before they start doing real promo
I think that's more than likely the reason. When a new album gets released the band are expected to promote it, do interviews, perform- sometimes even live, and if Gerard's not up to that then it's a no-show. If it were a problem with the record itself all along thn it wouldn't make sense for them to have recently started giving interviews saying it was 'almost done.' Even if you believe MCR are not aware enough to realise this will upset fans and lose them sales then you have to know WBR are.
1:14, I don't think MCR were ever 'in it for the chicks'. Despite their bad rep, compared to some other bands these guys really aren't *that* obscene. They just get crucified for it more as they put themselves on an unreasonably high pedastal, and inevitably fell off it.
However, I agree with your second point. They forgot to look after their fans over recent years.
They put themselves on that pedestal when they preached on about how special they were in the scene for respecting women and fans instead of exploiting them.
I don't think they were ever really about 'getting chicks' if the definition of that is sleeping with fans, models, actresses, etc. I do think though that when they found women of a certain ilk (Alicia, Lindsey) were suddenly attracted to them, their priorities changed. They saw themselves differently. I also think that those relationships are part of why they stopped caring about the fans.
Agree with everything 1:25 says, very eloquently put.
Think we have to cut the guy a bit of slack for the album delays though, he finished a 2 year world tour, got married, settled into a new house, had a baby and wrote a new record. Something had to give.
It seems there is alot of anger about them "not caring" for the fans anymore, personally I agree with some of the stuff said, but at the end of the day they all got married.
I don't think it's fair for them to give up their whole lives to, frankly, thousands of teenage girls.
I reckon there comes a point where people need to recognise that they are middle aged men who want to (as it seems) wrap it up now. I think that's fair enough.
I don't think most of us are angry with them because the "don't care about us" anymore. I personally never thought they cared about me.
I just thought that they cared about women in particular; I thought they were against violence and against misogyny in music, at concerts, etc. They sure talked the talk back then.
But now it's like they are totally different people.
I don't think they "changed" at all. I just think they were just being coached to say the things they used to say in order to cultivate a certain fanbase. I don't think it got them where they wanted to be so now they're trying a different tactic.
This has nothing to do with them 'getting married' and it never did. It has everything to do with them presenting a false facade to the public that they have been unable to maintain.
They were never the people they pretended to be and some of us are angry over that.
I reckon there comes a point where people need to recognise that they are middle aged men who want to (as it seems) wrap it up now. I think that's fair enough.
I get what you are saying, but middle aged? Well, if you die at 60-65yrs then maybe, but they aren't really middle aged yet. Some part of me thinks they are just giving up. Bands much older keep producing fantastic music, one example the Foo Fighters, but there are so many more. You don't need to give up on the band and fans just because you are happy and settled in your home life. The band is their professional life, I'd like to hope that the desire to make that better and better should still keep burning. A musician's life does not need to be short lived, like say a professional sportsman?
I think Gerard maybe gave up on all that when he got hitched and started persuing his real dream with The Umbrella Academy. I still think there is no need for him to drag the rest of the guys down with him. It seems pretty unfair.
I think the record company and possibly the band realized how much this record sucked so they went back to the drawing board. Yes I agree 1.11.

i think gerard's "vocal injuries" was code for "voice training to reduce shittiness"
and why is it always the second rate nobodies who think they're the greatest? there are some exceptions but mostly from what i've seen most big name music legends are pretty humble.
I think Gerard devoted so much time to fans in the beginning was because he was lonely. It just seems odd that once his relationship with Eliza was known, he started acting like a douche to fans. And ever since then, as there wasn't much downtime between her and Lindsey, Gerard has continued that behavior. I don't think there ever was a "Kat" or any other girl before Eliza, at least while he was in the band, because he was so friendly and willing to spend time talking with fans back then. It seems he gets arrogant and feels he's above them when he's with someone. I'm certainly not excusing his being an asshole, just offering a possible reason for it.
An interesting and valid point 4:05, and again we're only speculating but Gerard did strike me as a lonely, tragic kinda guy during the revenge era. It's one of the reasons myself and I'm sure many others felt for him- we recognised something of ourselves in him.
I think the reason he's had little time for fans lately is as previously mentioned his hectic lifestyle nowadays, but also I think back then the whole notion of fans was new and exciting. Back then they probably had about a quarter of the fanbase they had when TBP was in it's heyday. After 2 years of touring and getting stalked at airports I think it's just gotten too much to handle, on a personal level.
if you can't handle your day job, quit. seriously, if you gave this shitty of a job performance in any other industry you'd of already been fired by now.
if you can't handle your day job, quit. seriously, if you gave this shitty of a job performance in any other industry you'd of already been fired by now.
Fair enough, it is their job, but when you sign on for that kinda thing I don't think you can ever truely anticipate the level of attention. I don't know how many of you have seen the airport videos, but no one should have to deal with that.
i mean think about it, unless GW really was seeing a vocal coach and i'm not ruling it out, why would they wait this long... surly GW's throat issue has been cleared up by now. They could be trying to find a replacement for whoever it. 12.59 pointed out that Bryar has kept extremly quiet, is it possible that his wrists were to fucked up for him to continue playing? Also haven't seen a lot of Mikey lately, or Ray... just Frank and GW
or maybe bob up and left mcr. possibility. if anyone actually left though i kind of hope it's ray, so that he could find real musicians and live up to his potential.
they honestly should've just stopped touring after projekt rev. or you know, stopped as a band.
I seriously think getting rid of Brian will be one of the reasons this new album fails. We get that bands change, but you don't go around trashing everything you've put out and the fans hold love for.

If Gerard does have a vocal issue, it is most likely a vocal fold nodule. These require surgery and a month or so of rest. many singers have the same problem and successfully recover- Bert McCracken from The Used, Davey Havok of AFI and Bill Kaulitz from Tokio Hotel are some that spring to mind; and all had to cancel shows much like MCR are doing now.
I saw The Used at TOC in Feb, 2007 and even though he was smack in the middle of his vocal problems, he still sounded great -- on key, not overly breathy, etc. He couldn't scream though, so he borrowed Wil Francis from Aiden to help him out on songs like Box Full of Sharp Objects, but despite his inability to scream, he could still sing.
A couple of months after that, he had surgery (June, I think) and canceled shows for two months but was back touring again by the fall.
Gerard has been sounding like crap for a long time now. Nodes or no nodes, surgery or no surgery, he'll never be much of a singer in my opinion.
Gerard may not be much of a singer, but that fact was that he was able to go up on stage and do...whatever it was he was doing. If he can't do that now then they don't really have a show. It may be a couple of months but love it or hate it, MCR will be back. It's not even been a month yet and already people are saying this is their demise and speculating all manner of strange things.
AFI completly changed their musical style after Davey's vocal surgery; the vocals are much tighter, cleaner, and he rarely screams now. However, that man has the voice of an angel.
What kills me is that Frank said in his blog that Gerard had just started having trouble with his voice "recently". I lol'd at that.
I mean, c'mon. He sounded like shit all through PR and through their last tour. Granted, unlike Bert McCracken and Davey Havok, he never had a great voice, but he could barely hit a note by the time they finally stopped touring. Why did it take him so long to admit that something was wrong?
Oh for sure 4:06 (the second)just saying that I don't think this will be the last we hear of them. I find it a lil weird how people get 'Lynz is pregnant', 'he's getting divorced' or 'someone's left the band' from a believable 'Gerard Way is having vocal problems.' (Not calling anyone here out btw, I've heard those sorts of things said in various places.)
I find it a lil weird how people get 'Lynz is pregnant', 'he's getting divorced' or 'someone's left the band' from a believable 'Gerard Way is having vocal problems.'
I totally agree with you on that. I think fans are too quick to jump to silly conclusions. Although, the band isn't exactly known for being honest with fans so I can understand why fans doubt them.
After what has pretty much been constant touring since 2001, I can't say I blame them. They are at the point in their lives now where I think they want to settle, all having either recently got enagaged/married/starting families/ buying homes, etc. Which would be fine, only it's contradictory to the fact they are making a new record (even coming out of their supposed 'time off') and started doing publicity for it. I don't know what to believe.
They should get a stand in vocalist. Frank can do some singing too.
Franks actual singing in Pencey Prep was really whiny, and if you can call Leathermouth singing, well, let's just say he'd be heading down nodule road faster than you can say 'Gerard Way' if they toured for 2 years on that.
Maybe Lynz really is pregnant and he needs to stay home for her.
Oh no, please. Even if she was it would be very, very early days. I fail to see the need for him to give it all up and stay at home just yet. A couple of months after Bandit was born he was juggling being back in the studio.

That depends. I had a close friend who was very ill constantly throughout the first four months and her husband took a lot of time off work to look after their other two children.

Fair point, but Gerard and Lynz are no normal couple. I can see him wanting to be their for her, sure, but I don't think it would postpone their record when they know how important timing is. Gerard is only one member of the band, after all. Vocal problems are just SO much more likely, and I don't see why they would feel the need to lie about that. I don't know where all these strange rumours are coming from.
(If Lynz does indeed turn out to be pregnant I will humbly eat my words.)
Have you heard Frank 'sing'? That guy is a talented rhythmn guitarist, and his voice does lend itself well to a certain genre of music. Sadly MCR is not in that genre.

They can rejig their sound to suit his style of vocals. They might sound more raw and primal.
He could have vocal problems, at the same time they found out she was pregnant again. The vocal problem could be a convenient excuse.
Possible but still unlikely. If Lynz was pregnant I don't think they'd need an 'excuse' so to speak, and vocal problems are far from 'convenient' for a singer. I'll bet Gerard is terrified, he strikes me as the type.
If she was pregnant I don't see the need for delays. Maybe take a couple of months out 8 months down the line or something. I'm sure most women will tell you, life doesn't grind to a halt when you become pregnant. Hell, Lynz herself could still be out working for a another few months yet.
They can rejig their sound to suit his style of vocals. They might sound more raw and primal.
But then it would just be a toned down version of Leathermouth. It would alienate many MCR fans and just be a bad move all round. Frank live is no better than GW at PR.
But then it would just be a toned down version of Leathermouth. It would alienate many MCR fans and just be a bad move all round. Frank live is no better than GW at PR.
Leathermouth songs and MCR songs are constructed differently so the only similarity would be the vocal style. Who knows it might even draw in a whole new crowd, all those beloved hxc fans they so desperately want.
I don't think Frank's voice lends itself well to that type of song at all though, I think they would inevitably have to change the way their songs are constructed. Frank already has his own band where he does vocals, he doesn't need to take over MCR. It's already been said, but Gerard is part of the appeal for many.
Also Leathermouth didn't even get Frank the right sort of fanbase really. There was an interview with him saying there were a lot of 13 year old girls at the shows.
As do many 5:06, Frank is without a doubt second in popularity. My point was just that people have their favourites and for most of the fans it seems to be Gerard. The band themselves have said he is their 'off centre leader', he has a lot of influence over the direction and style of the band. Add to the pot that he isn't all that bad looking- this is what appeals to many of the fans, paticulary those of the teenage girl variety.
Sad fact is, I'm not sure how many want to, 5:20. Love him or hate him, Gerard has the showman presence and the looks. Bob and Ray are amazing musicians though, and severely underated.
You have GOT to be joking. Ray is far more sexier.
Of course everyone has their own personal opinions, and that's a great thing to see. I'm just saying for most, Gerard (and to some extent Frank and even Mikey) are seen as the eye candy, while Ray and Bob are sadly overlooked.
Gerard was nominated as one of nme's hottest males this year and seemed to be doing rather well by time voting closed. Strangely enough, Lyn-Z was also nominated for sexiest female. Sure many of the acts were not really 'mainstream', but still, how did that happen?
That NME Sexiest Male thing was a joke. The last time I looked at it the guys from Muse were in the lead.
Yeah, they're talented but sexy? Uh, no. And Gerard Way is about as sexy as a lamp post.
Those polls are just about which band has the most teenage girl fans with no life who are willing to sit at their computers hitting the refresh button over and over.
Those polls are just about which band has the most teenage girl fans with no life who are willing to sit at their computers hitting the refresh button over and over
I would not have figured it to be Muse. Also surprises me that Lyn-Z didn't do better, considering Chantal advertised it via twitter. Agree with you though, the top 5 was a joke. Rob Pattinson!? No thanks. Jared Leto was way too far down on that list as well.
MSI hasn't gotten much mileage in any American publications. If you look at the ridiculous increase in coverage on their press page since the marriage, you'll see that nearly all of the magazines are British.
Even AP (who totally has their heads up MCR's ass) has only done one article on them. People in the US just aren't interested.
I don't see how anyone could find Gerard "sexy". The very thought makes me shudder.
Back when I liked him, he had this kind of nerdish appeal that had to do with what I thought was his intellect. Little did I know that he had next to no intellect.
I think maybe that's where a lot of the problem lies with some of his ex-fans. People like their nerd-crushes to be nerdy. Like, for example, Sheldon on Big Bang Theory or Dr. Reid from Criminal Minds. They're always going to be nerdy, no matter what. They're not going to suddenly take up with some tattooed chick who flashes her underwear and go all "hxc" on us. If they did, we'd drop them like hotcakes.
^Of course, those guys are fictional characters. But given all the fanfic that fans wrote about MCR, I think a lot of fans saw those guys much the same way they do fictional characters.
Hearing your point loud and clear 6:32, however I'm one of those that still finds Gerard attractive, at least physically. You are right about him having a nerdish appeal, whether people 'fancied' him for that, or just respected him, it was one of the appeals. He was the quiet, arty goth kid that so many of us could identify with. He was emotional, sensitive and seemed to respect women.
I think Gerard always wanted his fans to be the kind that would stand the test of time, and let's face it, what band wouldn't? Teenage girls (for the most part) do not have that kind of staying power. This band didn't start out as manufactured boyband heartthrobs, they started off playing in grungy basements to misfit college kids. I don't think they wanted this.
I agree. I think that, should GW have ever predicted this fanbase, I'm not sure they would've done it. I think what happened was, MCR wanted to be a band like Green Day, but I think that, the record company sold them as a rock boy-band, because they brushed up half decently. They were goth, but safe. It was a bit of an untapped market.
Unfortunatly for them the whole thing was timed just right for them to hit the emo trend head on. Trend's never last. I think Gerard would have been happy remaining a somewhat underground band with real fans and a degree of success, much like their old friends Taking Back Sunday.
I think what happened was, MCR wanted to be a band like Green Day, but I think that, the record company sold them as a rock boy-band, because they brushed up half decently.
I think so too. Warner even tried marketing Green Day as something of a rock boyband during the American Idiot period (well, Billie Joe, anyway), but Green Day already had enough credibilty (not to mention years) in the rock world to weather that. MCR just got pigeonholed and I doubt they'll ever really recover from that.
Yes, and I own their live albums too. I'll be the first to admit he's not the greatest but I don't think he's as bad as nails on a chalkboard. If he were then even Ray and Bob's musical talent wouldn't have been enough to get them through TBP. Lately yes, he does sound awful but constant touring and undoubtedly cigarettes have taken their toll. When he's good he can at least carry a tune.
I'll never forget how awful he was at PR. The people around me and my friend were not MCR fans and they kept heckling him and saying things like, "Who told this guy he could sing?"
^I should also mention that they weren't anti-MCR people either. In fact, they'd never heard of them before PR (they were there for Linkin Park). They'd never heard of Brian Molko either, but they wound up loving Placebo. :D
I think it's kind of dumb. I always did. I mean, it's unusual and you remember it, but still. It just sounds like something that you would listen to when you're very, very young and then regret later on.
Matt Cortez has no problem behaving like a drunk scumbag. Does no one here rememeber Australia? Picture proof. How exactly would his unfemanistic behavior be so much better than Gerard's? He can masterbate three times in one hour too. Go Matt. Unless, all you are referring to is looks. But considering his behavior and careless attitude toward being caught both on video and film (as well as Ray Toro and James D) in such a way, he is not someone I would enjoy having to look at.
I think it's a catchy name and was relevant to what the band members were going through at the time. I like it. I think it's just the connotations that the name has now which makes it seem 'high school' esque.
Maybe it's just me, but I don't really like names that borrow from other titles. Bands who pilfer names from book titles (like As I Lay Dying) especially bother me.
I don't mind when they use literary references. I think Pencey Prep was a great name. But I don't like My Chemical Romance.
He can masterbate three times in one hour too. Go Matt. Unless, all you are referring to is looks. But considering his behavior and careless attitude toward being caught both on video and film (as well as Ray Toro and James D) in such a way
My point was, it's a name that would only get a very specific demographic, you can't just go complaining about it when you get old when you brought upon yourselves, starting with the band name.

There is no video of Cortez masterbating. (At least that I'm aware of.) That's ridiculous. Especially considering this bands fanbase, were there to be a video of that it would have surfaced immediately. I was referring to an interview with Gerard, where he stated that Cortez had proclaimed loudly (while they were all on the tour bus) that he could pull it off three times in a row, in very little time. A lot of mention of porn in that interview as well. THAT should have been around the Revenge era, unless I am remembering incorrectly. As far as Ray and James goes, there was a lot of talk about the pictures (and video) put up by some very young fans from Australia during touring after P.R. Things were bad then and the pictures (and video) of Ray, Cortez and James drunkenly making asses of themselves with young teens only made the situation look much worse to some fans, myself included. I didn't save the address, as it was nothing I wanted to see again. But I find it hard to believe that no one here has any memory of this. It was first posted on BN, of all places. It's on LJ if anyone wants to search it out. It's old news. But to think that Cortez would make a better frontman, simply because he never claimed to be a saint, is just the stupidest thing I've read. Sorry. That wouldn't make him better, that would just make him a more honest drunken ass. I don't know why we all believed Gerard, but it's not like he's the only rock star (or guy) to lie and fake something for gain. It goes with the territory.
I've seen lots of videos of Ray, Frank and Bob drunk and making asses of themselves. I remember one particular video of Bob where he was so drunk he couldn't even stand up. It kind of reminded me of the vids of Gerard in LOTMS.
I never had a problem with the guys, including Gerard, drinking. Gerard is the one who made a big deal about his sobriety, not the fans.
did mcr really have a place in music to steal? even when i was into them and i looked at it from a neutral point i never thought of them as groundbreaking or legendary. they were just kind of under the radar and i was fine with that
I don't think people were being serious about Matt becoming the frontman for MCR. I know I was joking around about it.
Maybe it is time for a new front man. Gerard could be out of commission for a while due to his throat problem, and he does seem happier to stay home and play hubby and daddy to his snookums.
Swell guy, that Gerard. I'm glad I never let him in on any of the secrets of my sex life.
I hardly doubt it was 'secret' if Matt announced it on the tour bus to everyone. And as such, I doubt he'd be ashamed, it's just a typical guy thing to say/talk about.
Must be hard for Gerard to be around the guys when they are all drunk like that. Where's the evidence for him being happy to stay at home as well? Gerard is a creative person and a natural showman, I don't think he'd be happy tucked away at home- I think it would eventually lead to depression. MCR is too well established for a new front man anyway. Why do a lot of people here see him as the devil incarnate while Matt- who has behaved in pretty much the same way- is celebrated?
Matt C never made out he was anything other than what he was to make a buck.
I don't believe Gerard flat out lied, more like got lost along the way. Besides, it doesn't make Matt's actions any more honourable.
Also MCR is well established, at least to the fans. Did you see the uproar when Frank had to leave some of the tour dates due to a family member's illness? One 'fan' said, and I quote 'I'm glad Frankie's taking the time out look after a sick loved one but there's no need to disappoint the rest of the world.' Others also called for the shows just to be cancelled, with no stand in. Imagine the uproar if one of the guys just left.
It's just talk on a blog, can't see any "calls to get rid of Gerard". But you have to admit the guy seems to prefer to stay home with Lindsey and his little girl.

LOL! we must never disappoint the thirteen year old fangirls of this world!
I'm confused by this comment, I'm not sure what it's supposed to mean. :S (Also I don't know too much about the whole Tiger Woods scandal anyway.)
Fair point, Matt never made himself out to be anything other than what he was, but I still don't think that makes him a more worthy replacement for Gerard. At the end of the day, the results are the same, one is no better than the other. Besides, we could have chosen to take it or leave it with Gerard, believe him or not. I don't remember him ever trying to hide his alcoholism.
It's just talk on a blog, can't see any "calls to get rid of Gerard". But you have to admit the guy seems to prefer to stay home with Lindsey and his little girl.
Well no, but all this talk of a new frontman irks me a little. It's like hating on Gerard while saying the rest of the band are acceptable when they have many of the same flaws. I stand by what I said before though, while he has a new wife and baby, of course he would want to spend time with them. In the long run though I don't think he would be happy just to stay at home. You need to have that balance, especially when you're a creative person.
all this talk of a new frontman irks me a little. It's like hating on Gerard while saying the rest of the band are acceptable when they have many of the same flaws.
It's called context and I'm not sure you understand it.
People here were talking about a new frontman (jokingly, for the most part) in relation to Gerard's vocal problems. If the guy were not to be able to sing anymore, then he couldn't very well front a band, now could he?
No, nobody knows the extent of Gerard's vocal problems and even though the band has said he will make a "full recovery" we don't really know what that means. Does it mean he'll get his voice back? And even if he does, was his voice too far gone for him to be worth anything as a singer? It's been shit for more than two years now, so it is a bit doubtful. We just don't know.
As far as Matt Cortez is concerned, it seems to me that his name was brought up facetiously, and only because he was always the guy who filled in for the others when they were out. I have no idea whether or not he can even sing. I do know that he's easy on the eyes and that he saved the band's ass more than once and that fans like him, but that doesn't mean he would make a good frontman. Still, we can joke about it, right? Or does that offend your delicate sensibilities too much?
Well, even though I do like Matt Cortez (I was one of the people rooting for him to take over the bass player's duties permanently), it really wouldn't matter to me whether he or anybody else took over for Gerard.
As far as I'm concerned, MCR is dead, Gerard or no Gerard.
Joking is fine, it just seems to get a little malicious from time to time.
Fair enough to the people who say MCR needs a new frontman/stand in due to Gerard's current vocal problems. I'm sure he will make a recovery though, hundreds of artists have had this problem.
I just find it a bit tiresome when a lot of the time it's linked back to hate for the guy. I mean how many people have even heard Matt Cortez sing? I understand why his name was brought up, I just think it seems a lil hypocritical to hate on Gerard while thinking that Matt replacing him would be cool just because Matt is 'honest' about being a bit of a jerk.
I recognise those that were joking, it doesn't bother me and it wouldn't matter even if it did. There were those who were having a serious debate about the merits of replacing Gerard though, and it was those people I was addressing.
Joking is fine, it just seems to get a little malicious from time to time.
I think you're taking this too personally.

This is the very thing that drives me crazy about this band. Why don't they come right out and tell people what's going on? Other bands do.
All we have to go on is Frank's blog about some mysterious throat ailment. We can only speculate about polyps and nodules and possible surgery.
I think they love to keep fans guessing. They probably love the stupid cancer rumors as well.
This is just one more reason why I hate this band.
It seems we have a Gerard fangirl here. Their idol is irreplaceable.
I take offense to the term fangirl. I'm not a teenager. Gerard is not my idol or 'savior', he is a guy in a band who doesn't even know I exist and never will. Do I like the person he has become? No. Do I still like the music? Yes. Do I agree with some of your points? Of course, I'm not stupid.
Probably, though I think seeing Matt Cortez front MCR would be an experience.
If MCortez can't sing could be a problem. Maybe Ray and Bob could conduct a search for a frontman and account their search rockumentary style. They can even have flashbacks of Pro Rev showing G Way and his emerging vocal problems.
This is kind of out of left field, but to the people arguing surgery v. vocal training, it should probably be pointed out that nodules and polyps are often caused by improper use of the vocal cords. So, in addition to surgery, singers will often have some time of voice training as part of their treatment.
I'm pretty sure I read that Bert McCracken was working with a vocal trainer after his surgery.
So, in addition to surgery, singers will often have some time of voice training as part of their treatment.
^ This
It's learning to breathe properly and re-strengthening the vocal chords. Davey Havok and Bert both had to change vocal styles afterwards (less screaming and more singing.)
I've been reading back over these blogs and I have a random question. Where did people ever get the impression that Mayo's blog was written by Gerard in the first place? And who is this 'SS' character that people keep saying was Frank?

«Oldest ‹Older 801 – 1000 of 1953 Newer› Newest»i agree.. there are very few artists/bands who can sustain touring for 2 years.
That's pretty cool.
i'm thinking it's not just Gerard, but the whole of MCR that like screwing with the fans' brains. i don't get it. do they just not give a fuck?
They think that by being 'badass' and creating that kind of distance they can appeal to the wider music buying public. They know they need to shake off the associations with a dying Emo culture, but unfortunantly, they're doing it in the worst way possible. Rather than letting the music speak for itself, they're actually performing a kind of commercial suicide.
i understand that there needs to be some 'mystery' to rockstars, however GW seems to have done it wrongly.
Bryar on the other hand has kept extremly quiet.
After Gerard's hickeys and his sharpied proclamations of loooooove for the wifey, Gerard lost all chance of ever being perceived as mysterious.
So maybe they're rewriting songs and getting him a voice coach.
it is all of them, not just gerard.
they obviously got in it for the chicks and now that they have booty on demand they only way theyd give a shit about us is if their wives did.
whores and assholes all of them. this album is going to bomb because they forgot to take care of the people who buy it.
LOL 1.14. I could not agree more.
Fucking liars, all of them. I really hate that I ever believed their bullshit.
They put themselves on that pedestal when they preached on about how special they were in the scene for respecting women and fans instead of exploiting them.
they put themselves on an unreasonably high pedastal
As stated, couldn't agree more. People have every right to feel disappointed, I know I do. :/
I don't think they ever really cared about fans.
I just think they stopped pretending to care about fans because they didn't think they had to anymore.
I'm disappointed in them too. I hate that I ever believed their b.s. to begin with.
Honestly, I'm thinking it could be both.

Yes I agree 1.11.

^This.
They still care about their fans -- as long as their last name is Cobain, that is.
i think gerard's "vocal injuries" was code for "voice training to reduce shittiness"
and why is it always the second rate nobodies who think they're the greatest? there are some exceptions but mostly from what i've seen most big name music legends are pretty humble.
This.
Fair enough, it is their job, but when you sign on for that kinda thing I don't think you can ever truely anticipate the level of attention. I don't know how many of you have seen the airport videos, but no one should have to deal with that.
Too bad MCR squandered so much time touring on tired old TBP. They should have stopped in late 07 and gone into the studio a year earlier.
Too true.
we've all been talking about gerard's shitty vocals but is it possible someone got pissed and left the band?
i mean think about it, unless GW really was seeing a vocal coach and i'm not ruling it out, why would they wait this long... surly GW's throat issue has been cleared up by now.
Did FOB sort themselves legally before they casually announced their split?
i would hope so. they're a lot more popular than mcr in the states so they should definitely have their asses covered
If MCR splits they'll be just one of many bands who may have been influential in the music scene had they made the right decisions.
I seriously think getting rid of Brian will be one of the reasons this new album fails. We get that bands change, but you don't go around trashing everything you've put out and the fans hold love for.
Or wanting to mimic your numbskull wife's band.

It may be a couple of months but love it or hate it, MCR will be back.
Regardless, that doesn't mean this new record will be a success. Time (and probably lots of it) will tell.
I find it a lil weird how people get 'Lynz is pregnant', 'he's getting divorced' or 'someone's left the band' from a believable 'Gerard Way is having vocal problems.'
(Not calling anyone here out btw, I've heard those sorts of things said in various places.)
Gerard may not be much of a singer, but that fact was that he was able to go up on stage and do...whatever it was he was doing.
Make little girls scream? Seriously, the guy is not going to be able to do that much longer.
I don't think they want to tour anymore.
Get through the songs 4:11, if they can't even do that anymore, however poorly, then things need sorting.
MCR fans have always been very...intense, shall we say. I've seen a lot of haters saying similar things though 4:11 (the first.)
They should try a new concept like MCR instrumental. They don't need their crappy vocalist.
They should get a stand in vocalist. Frank can do some singing too.
I don't think they want to tour anymore.
I would love to watch Frank sing a whole MCR gig.
Maybe Lynz really is pregnant and he needs to stay home for her.
Oh no, please. Even if she was it would be very, very early days. I fail to see the need for him to give it all up and stay at home just yet. A couple of months after Bandit was born he was juggling being back in the studio.
I think they're both crazy, though you could be right 4:24.
I would love to watch Frank sing a whole MCR gig.
So would I.
You should start a petition to get MCR to tour with Frank as vocalist.
You should start a petition to get MCR to tour with Frank as vocalist.
Is that for the lols or do you seriously think he can sing? :S
How much worse could he be than GW?
How much worse could he be than GW?
Have you heard Frank 'sing'? That guy is a talented rhythmn guitarist, and his voice does lend itself well to a certain genre of music. Sadly MCR is not in that genre.
He could have vocal problems, at the same time they found out she was pregnant again. The vocal problem could be a convenient excuse.

They can rejig their sound to suit his style of vocals. They might sound more raw and primal.
Who needs Gerard? Frank would draw many fans back to their concerts. Ray could sing a few as well.

Seriously where did this come from!?
They can rejig their sound to suit his style of vocals. They might sound more raw and primal.
But then it would just be a toned down version of Leathermouth. It would alienate many MCR fans and just be a bad move all round. Frank live is no better than GW at PR.
Gerard maybe terrified though he is lucky to have Lindsey look after him, even though she could be pregnant.
Who needs Gerard? Frank would draw many fans back to their concerts. Ray could sing a few as well.
For the majority of the fanbase, Gerard is MCR's main appeal.
For the majority of the fanbase, Gerard is MCR's main appeal.
I totally disagree.
5:06, it's a sad fact but the lead singer always gets the most attention. Many people out there know Gerard, how many know Bob, or even Ray?
Many people out there know Gerard, how many know Bob, or even Ray?
And now they can get to know them, while GW looks after himself and the wife.
I don't give a rat's for Gerard. Frank is the one I wanna see play.
As do many 5:06, Frank is without a doubt second in popularity. My point was just that people have their favourites and for most of the fans it seems to be Gerard. The band themselves have said he is their 'off centre leader', he has a lot of influence over the direction and style of the band. Add to the pot that he isn't all that bad looking- this is what appeals to many of the fans, paticulary those of the teenage girl variety.
he isn't all that bad looking-
To teenage girls. And Eliza. And Lindsey.
Frank is THe man!
Sad fact is, I'm not sure how many want to, 5:20. Love him or hate him, Gerard has the showman presence and the looks. Bob and Ray are amazing musicians though, and severely underated.
To teenage girls. And Eliza. And Lindsey.
*tiny voice* And me >.>
They can rejig their sound to suit his style of vocals. They might sound more raw and primal.
They can call it the Frank does MCR tour. They can even make badges as part of their merch.
*I meant look not looks
Love him or hate him, Gerard has the showman presence and the looks.
You have GOT to be joking. Ray is far more sexier.
Frank does MCR
The fangirls would be rendered unconcious by the awesomeness of that name.
I would pay good money just to watch Frank sing I don't love you
Or even Cancer .
Doubtless Frank and the guys could pull out some awesome covers. I just don't think that style would be enough to carry a band like MCR.
Gerard was nominated as one of nme's hottest males this year and seemed to be doing rather well by time voting closed. Strangely enough, Lyn-Z was also nominated for sexiest female. Sure many of the acts were not really 'mainstream', but still, how did that happen?
They picked a really unflattering photo of her as well.
Maybe it was rigged to favour people they knew might actually make an appearance to pick up the award.
Strangely enough, Lyn-Z was also nominated for sexiest female. Sure many of the acts were not really 'mainstream', but still, how did that happen?
It happened because she married Gerard. Apparently that's still enough to get you a nomination in NME's sexiest poll.
It doesn't get you squat in any American magazine though.
Wife or not I am still confused as to why Lyn-Z ended up in the mix considering her band is on hiatus.
MCR are a lot bigger in Britain than they are in America.
Probably because there aren't all that many women in alternative rock to choose from?
Some of the other acts were far from alternative- half of Girls Aloud were nominated.
MSI have always been bigger in Europe as well.
Does that make any sense?
^Of course, those guys are fictional characters. But given all the fanfic that fans wrote about MCR, I think a lot of fans saw those guys much the same way they do fictional characters.
Lol. Like when Peter Parker tried to go all badass in Spiderman 3.
No. Just. No.
Haha, Sheldon, how awesome. ^.^
He was the quiet, arty goth kid that so many of us could identify with. He was emotional, sensitive and seemed to respect women.
Yeah, and then he seemed to throw that whole persona down the drain and adopt a new one. I think that really put a lot of people off.
It certainly did make many of us question them and subsequently they lost a lot of fans.
Warner even tried marketing Green Day as something of a rock boyband during the American Idiot period
Yeah, the era of the Bille Joe dolls was a dark time indeed.
I don't know why Matt Cortez can't just fill in for Gerard. Hell, he's filled in for everyone else.
Oooh, I'd go see MCR with Matt Cortez as the front man.
I can't believe that people would still go see them and support them with their money after all we've learned.
It was just a joke. I wouldn't see MCR if somebody gave me a ticket. No matter who was singing.
But...should Matt ever get his own band...that's another story.
Voices are unique, instruments are not.
Voices are unique
And thank God there's not another one like Gerard Way's. Although there is fingernails on chalboard...
*chalkboard
He's not an amazing singer but he's not all that terrible either.
Have you actually seen him live? I wouldn't really even call what he does these days singing.
PR and Summersonic were an embarrasment though, I'll give you that.
I'll never forget how awful he was at PR. The people around me and my friend were not MCR fans and they kept heckling him and saying things like, "Who told this guy he could sing?"
It was embarrassing.
^I should also mention that they weren't anti-MCR people either. In fact, they'd never heard of them before PR (they were there for Linkin Park). They'd never heard of Brian Molko either, but they wound up loving Placebo. :D
Oooh, I'd go see MCR with Matt Cortez as the front man.
The Matt Cortez Romance Band.
How about if it's just the Matt Cortez Band and they leave out the Romance part? And he gets all new members.
The Matt Cortez Romance Band.
The hawt version of MCR .
Really, you named your band "My Chemical Romance", what did you expect?
It's a good band name.
Well then come up with something so much better 2:07.
What did he do, 2:07?
Well then come up with something so much better 2:07.
Lol. Why so butthurt?
It's just an opinion.
I think it's a catchy name and was relevant to what the band members were going through at the time. I like it. I think it's just the connotations that the name has now which makes it seem 'high school' esque.
2:07 I'm also interested as to what Matt and Ray did? Was it just them appearing drunk or something more?
Gerard is no better than those other guys. He just lies about it.
Maybe it's just me, but I don't really like names that borrow from other titles. Bands who pilfer names from book titles (like As I Lay Dying) especially bother me.
I don't mind when they use literary references. I think Pencey Prep was a great name. But I don't like My Chemical Romance.
The difference between Matt and Gerard is that Matt never claimed to be anybody's role model or savior.
"It just sounds like something that you would listen to when you're very, very young and then regret later on."
lol well for alot of people especially in this blog that certainly applies to mcr.
There's video of Matt Cortez masturbating?
Link.

Really?

I don't think people were being serious about Matt becoming the frontman for MCR. I know I was joking around about it.
Woah. Calm down.
So, wait. Matt didn't tell the press about his masturbating -- Gerard did?
Swell guy, that Gerard. I'm glad I never let him in on any of the secrets of my sex life.
i think these guys will take mcrs place - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yqLPtRGfvo
Maybe. They don't appeal to me, but then I guess I've outgrown that type of music.
*shrugs*
did mcr really have a place in music to steal? even when i was into them and i looked at it from a neutral point i never thought of them as groundbreaking or legendary. they were just kind of under the radar and i was fine with that
did mcr really have a place in music to steal?
Didn't really seem like it to me. They went from being a band not many people knew about to that band on the little mall emos t-shirts.
They were barely even a blip on the radar.

No thank you!
Can do without that stimulating piece ^_^
Why do a lot of people here see him as the devil incarnate while Matt- who has behaved in pretty much the same way- is celebrated?
i think these guys will take mcrs place - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yqLPtRGfvo
Who was that link of? WBR has blocked it in my country due to 'copyright.' *rolls eyes*
Matt C never made out he was anything other than what he was to make a buck.
MCR is too well established for a new front man anyway.
The world is flat too.
A lot of people here dislike the band and admit they would never buy an MCR record/go to a gig. So why the calls to get rid of Gerard?
I don't believe Gerard flat out lied, more like got lost along the way
Did Tiger Woods imply the same thing?
Besides, it doesn't make Matt's actions any more honourable.
Never said his actions were 'honourable', he never made out to be something he wasn't so you could either take him or leave him.
So why the calls to get rid of Gerard?
It's just talk on a blog, can't see any "calls to get rid of Gerard". But you have to admit the guy seems to prefer to stay home with Lindsey and his little girl.

LOL! we must never disappoint the thirteen year old fangirls of this world!
Did Tiger Woods imply the same thing?
Besides, we could have chosen to take it or leave it with Gerard, believe him or not. I don't remember him ever trying to hide his alcoholism.
You could take or leave Gerard, but he painted such a pretty picture of himself he made all the little girls fall under his (fake) spell.
I stand by what I said before though, while he has a new wife
I wouldn't call Lindsey a 'new wife'.
In the long run though I don't think he would be happy just to stay at home. You need to have that balance, especially when you're a creative person.
He seems happier working with his comic than the band.
all this talk of a new frontman irks me a little.
Geez.
I can't see what the problem is with having a new frontman for a while. Adam Lazzarra filled in for Gerard once. If Matt Cortez can sing why not?
It seems we have a Gerard fangirl here. Their idol is irreplaceable.
I can't see what the problem is with having a new frontman for a while.
Because so many people think of Gerard as the band.
Only hope that Matt C doesn't have a dense wife.
Because so many people think of Gerard as the band.
I never saw Gerard as "the band". More like the spokesman of the band. Sometimes he spoke way too much.
Sometimes he spoke way too much.
Lol. Ya think? I guess that's why he had an entire community devoted to telling him to STFU. ;)
Joking is fine, it just seems to get a little malicious from time to time.
I think you're taking this too personally.
I recognise those that were joking, it doesn't bother me and it wouldn't matter even if it did. There were those who were having a serious debate about the merits of replacing Gerard though, and it was those people I was addressing.
I don't think you did.

As far as I'm concerned, MCR is dead, Gerard or no Gerard.
Probably, though I think seeing Matt Cortez front MCR would be an experience.
Anyway. Carry on.
So, in addition to surgery, singers will often have some time of voice training as part of their treatment.
^ This
It's learning to breathe properly and re-strengthening the vocal chords. Davey Havok and Bert both had to change vocal styles afterwards (less screaming and more singing.)
so this might actually improve him???
It's possible. Though did anyone else hear the rumours that he worked with a vocal coach before recording TBP?
has anybody seen Lynz's latest tweet? "I know ALL the lyrics to the notorious B.I.G's album ready to die. do you?"
The fan girls also noticed that MCR is literally dead...
I fail to see the relevance of her tweet :S
I've been reading back over these blogs and I have a random question. Where did people ever get the impression that Mayo's blog was written by Gerard in the first place? And who is this 'SS' character that people keep saying was Frank?
