The art of defending racism

Someone sent me a great link in my inbox today that I want to share with you all. These are a lot of the excuses we hear from the MSICR camp and defenders...

The Art of Defending Racism

Saying or doing something racist will come naturally to you- but defending it? You’ll want to use one of the following tactics. ...

Tactical options:

A. It’s not that serious

1. We didn’t know better (and we never will)
2. You’re too sensitive
3. It’s not a big deal because it’s just (a movie, a song, a book, words, etc.)
4. Why should we care? (You don't matter anyway)
....

B. But!

...
7. We’re not discriminating AS MUCH (as other people/as we used to), isn’t that good?!? Give me a cookie.
...

C. Dismissal!

1. You’re oppressing me by making me be “PC”
2. You’re too stupid to be in this conversation and everything you say doesn’t matter
3. Racism is over now
4. If we don’t talk about it, it’ll magically go away
5. Under my definition- it’s not racist
6. You’re too angry/You’re being irrational
...

Denial of impact:

Denial of impact involves a person avoiding thinking about or understanding the harms their behavior have caused to themselves or others. By doing this, that person is able to avoid feeling a sense of guilt and it can prevent that person from developing remorse or empathy for others.

This is a really old link but it's pretty good and it reminded me of some of what people say here in defense of these people.

I think the same thing goes for misogyny and homophobia presented in these lyrics, comments and lifestyles too.

Eliza is better off without him. He hurts people and he doesn't care because in the end it is always about himself and what he gets out of it. He still has a long way to mature emotionally.

He's hot, but he can't act for shit.

He's so hot it don't matter that he can't act for shit. Even when he's hired to act.

The good thing is that if he really loves Lindsey the way he says he does then his daughter has two loving parents. Children raised with parents that really love and respect each other do well.

Anonymous said...

That vampire episode of CM with Gavin Rossdale is still one of my favorites.

Anonymous said...

He was almost admitting in that interview that Lindsey was the infamous "Kat".

So he and Lindsey had a 6 year relationship that was almost a marriage, yet he cheated on her with an insane-o groupie like Eliza who he fell in love with and then he dumped Lindsey, only to go crawling back to her once he found out that Eliza was only using him?

Wow. What a great love story.

Oh ick. I just saw pictures of MCR's concert in London last night and Gerard and Mikey were both wearing sleeveless shirts. WTF is wrong with those dudes' arm muscles? Both of them would lose in an arm wrestling contest with their wives. Hell, I'm a 105 pound girl and I have more muscle mass in my arms than they do. My twelve year old brother who does nothing but play video games has more muscle mass than they do.

Bad genetics?

I just wish Gerard would shut the fuck up about LynZ already!! Yes we know you love her, she inspires you, she's the one, blah blah blah. He needs to let the other guys speak! I've never seen someone go on about their other half so much!

Anonymous said...

He needs to let the other guys speak! I've never seen someone go on about their other half so much!

I don't even think it's about Lindsey -- it's more about himself. "Oh look at me! I have the perfect relationship! Blah, blah, Art Skewl, blah, David Bowie, Blah, Blah. I'm such a rebel within the Corporate Environment, blah, blah, blah."

It was annoying went he went on ad nauseam about his dead grandma. It was annoying when he went on about ending his relationship with "Kat". Everything he says is all about "Look at me!"

He needs to just shut the fuck up once in a while.

Anonymous said...

He is so full of shit it's incredible. I listen to his interviews just for pure entertainment because I know a load of crap will fall out of his mouth every time he opens it.

Oh yeah, corporate rebellion my ass. How can he say he's rebelling against a major corporation-Warner Bro's, I assume, and then have the balls to sell that shitty ass Killjoy set for $70? A company like Warner obviously wants to make money off the band so obviously they would sell that shit to the fans. If Gerard really wanted to rebel (lol) he'd have said no to the very idea because it's clearly a rip-off for the fans.

I just wish he'd shut up and not say anything, maybe let Ray talk. He seems reasonably intelligent.

Anonymous said...

Don't be hating on Gewawd just cause he loves his wife.

Don't hate on Lyndsey just cause Gewawd loves her and thinks she's perfect.

That's what people in love believe. That their partner is perfect. Or the closest to thing to perfect that they've ever known.

I think GW is looking healthier and better than ever. There is nothing wrong with the muscle tone in his arms.

Mikey has great muscle tone too. Despite needing to eat. He needs cookies. Many cookies. For breakfast, lunch and dinner. Some cakes and pies for dessert.

Still Mikey does have the best ass of any member of MCR. Skinny as he may be.

And from what I saw and heard the band sounded great at their first show since Summersonic. A big improvement from that Japan show.

Should they ever agree to follow NIN again. No. Not very many bands could follow Trent Reznor and whoever he has backing him and have it be ordained a success. But MCR is sounding and looking great.

Anonymous said...

Give kudos to people who deserve them.

MCR deserve kudos for their performance at the Hammersmith Apollo.

They played well. Their audience was happy. They did their job.

Anonymous said...

I do agree that Ray should probably talk more often. He seems to the be the one who is taken the most seriously and gets the most respect as a musician. Let him talk.

Anonymous said...

Did Mrs. Reznor give birth to the next musical genius yet? She's due this month.

Anonymous said...

Nobody hate Gerard because he loves his wife. We dislike him because he's a moron who talks to much and nearly everything he says comes out of his ass.

And yes, his arms are ridiculously skinny for a man in his mid-thirties.

Regarding the concert, I wasn't there and don't plan on being at any of their shows. I'm sure the fangirls convinced themselves that it was the ZOMG, BEST CONCERT EVAR!1!, and more power to them.

All I know is that Gerard's voice makes my ears bleed. I think they are a terrible live band and I am entitled to that opinion.

Glad you enjoyed the show though.

MCR fans live in their own little world where they only see the good reviews...which are usually the only reviews they get because most of the mainstream world pays them no attention.

They think because a handful of their very best friends love them, the whole world loves them. Not so.

Anonymous said...

Here's an objective 3/5 star review from somebody who isn't an overzealous fan person or who isn't trying to sell magazine copies (Kerrang!, Rock Sound) with glowing MCR reviews.

Link.

I see they're still drawing "mostly females". Must be killing Gerard.

Anonymous said...

I love how she called them a Boy Band, because for all their "we're dangerous and punk" posturing, that's exactly what they are, which is evident when you watch those videos from the show.

I could barely hear anything over the screaming.

Anonymous said...

If you watch old videos of The Beatles or Elvis you can barely hear anything over the screaming in those.

I'm not an MCR fangirl. I don't think they are the OMG!!!!91111!!!! the best band in the world. Live or on cd.

There are much more talented musicians and song writers out there who will never achieve the success MCR has and that is unfortunate but it's not MCR's fault.

They are a good band and they did a great job at their first live show in over a year. Can't you people even give them that?

Anonymous said...

I wasn't there. Were you?

I will admit that was alot better than that Roxy show. It was smart of them to scrap those other songs like Death to Disco. I'm not really sure about the other new songs because it WAS live and that isn't one of their strong points. As far as putting on a good show, i'm glad it was for the fans that camped out all night to get in.

Anonymous said...

The Beatles were able to transcend "Boy Band" status. Although Elvis was talented and did do a lot to pioneer rock & roll, I think the screaming girl, teen idol thing ruined him. He stopped making good music and started making bad movies. At the end, he was a mere caricature of himself.

Only time will tell which artists will become as iconic as The Beatles or Elvis. I don't think the Backstreet Boys or 'N Sync are going to achieve that and I don't think MCR will either.

I could be wrong, but I don't think I am. You may disagree and that's your right.

Anonymous said...

At least Gerard apologised to the minors in the audience after telling them that the band was "punish fucking" them.

Nice one, Gerard. No misogyny there.

"Mikey, come here and get your punishment," said Gerard dangerously.

"Wh-wh-what did I do?" asked Mikey fearfully.

"You fucked up your bassline twice tonight, little brother. You know what that means..." replied Gerard with a sinister look on his face.

Mikey swallowed hard. "Punish fucking?"

Gerard smiled. "You got it, lil Bro. Now, drop trou and bend over."

Nice one, Gerard. No misogyny there.

October 24, 2010 4:59 PM

Just because a website defines the term as misogynistic, doesn't mean Way actually meant it like that. He did say "audience," not just the women. And he did apologize. I give him credit for that. Aside from that, he's not the only rock star with a trashmouth. But he does seem at the moment, to be the only one owning up to it. You can't fault him for apologizing. That's just stupid.

Anonymous said...

Aside from that, he's not the only rock star with a trashmouth. But he does seem at the moment, to be the only one owning up to it. You can't fault him for apologizing. That's just stupid.

Obviously he was in a sound enough state of mind to realize that there were minors in the audience. He also knew that the majority of the crowd was female.

No, maybe the comment wasn't meant to be misogynist, but it was still inappropriate, given that there were probably hundreds of 13-14 year olds in the audience.

And yeah, good on him for apologizing, if he meant it. I'd be willing to wager that he'll say it again (probably more than once) before the tour is over.

Anonymous said...

Well then, at least he's in a state of mind to know it's wiser to fake it. It will be a shame if it is just a bullshit acknowledgement. But IMO, it's better than him laughing at his fans, after saying something like that to them.

It's not the worst he's said. But he's owning it. In the very least, he's *currently acknowledging his position and fanbase. That deserves a bit of recognition. It's a start.

Anonymous said...

I was at the first show in London, and I would say the majority of fans there, were late teens. I was also amazed how many older fans were there and how many males were there.
I was at the front for about 20 mins, decided to get out and stand further back, (a group of 7/8 twenty yr old boys hurling themselves around wasn't my scene)!
I enjoyed the show, and I was pleasantly surprised with Gerard's vocals, I think he's been working on them.
Would I go again?
Yes! But can i sit, as i'm getting too old!

Anonymous said...

Thanks for sharing, 12:12AM. It's nice to read something about them like that. It's been a while. (And I second you, with the sitting.)

Anonymous said...

Gerard may not have the biggest arms or whatever, but he does look healthy and that can only be a good thing for his daughter. I've seen some videos of their concert at the Hammersmith and I think they sound okay-a lot better then the Roxy shows.

As for the "punish fucking" (WTF?) comments, he's always had a dirty mouth and few brain cells-a lethal combination, especially when there are youngsters in the audience. I bet a lot of MCR fans will start saying that now since Gerard said it. Sigh.

Maybe she did? Saying "WTF AHAHA," is not the same thing as saying it was "worse" than things MSI has done, now is it?

You must be the person who made that original comment. You make about as much sense as she does. Are you going to say you didn't mean "worse" doesn't mean "worse" again? *rolls eyes*

Anonymous said...

Let me rephrase that.

Are you going to say that you really didn't mean "worse" when you said "worse", you meant "worse" instead?

Anonymous said...

Wait. Did somebody say the Britney and Madonna kiss was worse than MSI's lyrics? How is it worse? How is girls kissing girls bad? I can't believe that would come from someone in the MCR fandom after all the Frerard.

Anonymous said...

Yes, that's exactly what one of them said. She asked why we pick on MSI when bigger stars did "worse" things, and then she gave the Madonna/Britney kiss as an example. Which was so ridiculous, considering that Rolling Stone actually commented in its Pro Rev article about Gerard "violently kissing his guitarist" (aka Frank).

The kiss between Gerard and that guy was about as juicy as a piece of leather. The same goes for all the Frerard kisses I saw. Yeah, there was tongue action involved there, but Gerard was always so awkward and overdramatic and Frank always looked like he was thinking "are the fans eating this up?" Those were the fakest kisses I ever saw.

I think he feels more comfortable now. He used to wear jackets and long sleeved shirts and you know he was hot as hell under those lights. Those arm holes in his shirt are stretching out so much after all that wear, he will be shirtless by the time they tour in U.S.

So are you saying that it's okay for a man to be stick thin, even when they aren't genetically predisposed to be that way (which, considering Gerard's past, he obviously is not).

People go on about how women shouldn't try to be stick thin, yet Gerard and Mikey's arms are not much bigger than the runway models you see.

Anonymous said...

I don't think in Gerard's case that he was genetically predisposed to be chubby. He is not a big man and i think being depressed and staying in playing dungons and dragons in his basement made him unhealthy and overweight as a kid.

Gerard is approx 5'6" and has a medium frame.

An optimum healthy weight for a man that height and frame is 139 to 151 pounds.

Because seriously, no one can think that I'd go to a concert by a band I already know sucks live, to sit there and get insulted by a bunch of misogynist rawk-turds.

Face it, "anon." You just wanted me to reply to you so that you'd have some fantasy material later. :D

Aww, here ya go, hon. I still wear that striped sweater you hated too, so there's something for you to picture. ^_^

I have to admit that I'm a little bit disgusted by how the fangirls and trolls have taken over this poor blog. Lots of people here seem to treat this blog like the new BN or something, fixating on stuff about MCR.

Used to be y'all just agreed they were a bunch of douchewhistles and didn't care what their arms looked like, christ.

Seriously, I have friends who really tried to continue being fans, who heard some of the new stuff, and just don't have it in them to be interested anymore. Personally, I haven't heard it and I don't care to. But it gratifies me that even the people who didn't take issue with MMSICR's assity cant' even stand the new music.

See, and I couldn't. Once a person reveals that they are that kind of person, I can't support them in any way. It's just how I'm built. People, companies, anything. Once the racism or other -isms come out, or I disagree with their policies, it's over for good between me and that entity.

I just don't get how people can support--monetarily or tacitly or any other way--what they know to be so grotesque.

And I also don't understand this "read it and weep, haterxzzzzz my band is POPULAR SO THERE" mentality.

It rarely does.

MCR's record won't be released for another month or so. How can anyone predict that it will be #1?

It's coming out the same day as Kanye West, another Justin Bieber record, Ke$ha, Ne-Yo and a lot of other really stiff competition (not to mention, a lot of kids are going to be spending their money on Harry Potter tickets that week). It may chart at #1 in a few countries, but in the US and globally? I seriously doubt it.

Even so, who cares? As has often been pointed out before, popularity often goes hand in hand with mediocrity.

Oh, and Starzlife Who? Never heard of it.

Well honestly, Wuthering Heights is straight up one of my favorite books ever, so I had a blast watching it.

HOWEVER. Even to someone who didn't like the book, I'd still really have to recommend this movie, seriously just for his performance. It is stellar. What you'll find amazing--if you're like me--is how he doesn't have to do a big, ranty, overblown Heathcliff. He just delivers every line with either quiet menace or heartbreak, and sometimes doesn't have to say anything at all. In fact maybe one of my favorite scenes was when Nelly puts him in front of the mirror to look at himself and he doesn't even utter a word.

They did screw up the ending, though. :/

I've only seen Tom Hardy in Inception and Star Trek: Nemesis, but I loved him in both, even though Nemesis was a bad movie.

I'm definitely going to be on the lookout for his other work.

I haven't yet seen Star Trek, but I'm guessing it's worth it for him?

Oh man, RockNRolla is a great place to start. What a movie. :D

kapunua said...

Even so, who cares? As has often been pointed out before, popularity often goes hand in hand with mediocrity.

Right, and MCR's fanbase is similar to that of Twatlight's: 14 year old girls and uninspired middle-aged women. There can of course always be those discerning 14 year old girls and those discerning uninspired middle-aged women. I'm not saying that popularity and mediocrity always to hand in hand or are married or whatever. Just that the two have been caught snogging in the road on many occasions. Many popular things have also been pretty good. I mean, I love Stephen King, and even most literature people must admit that he's got his finger on the pulse of turning the mundane into the epic - and he's mad popular.

I'm also not saying that people who are into MCR suck, or are stupid or whatever. I liked them, once. (Before they started acting like dicks, before I heard them live, before I knew what AutoTune was, etc.) But even if I still could enjoy their music, (unlikely,) I wouldn't be able to support them.

Anonymous said...

It definitely is. I think he did the best that anyone could have done with the role he was given in that movie. It's interesting to see how much he's changed. I remember seeing it way back when it first came out and thinking, "Oh, who is that hot bald guy?" (the young one -- not John Stewart. ^_^)

kapunua said...

And to me, it's not even worth comparing the popularity of MCR against someone like 30STM. Why compare their perceived popularity? If only one other person in the world liked 30STM, I'd still like them, because I love their music and I am down with what they put forth. If another 30 million people liked 30STM--so long as it didn't drastically change how they present themselves--I'd like them then, too.

I also don't think you can compare the two bands or the two frontmen, even. I won't lie: I think Leto's got it all over someone like Gerard Way, professionally, artistically, and even as a human being. I think he's a better person; I feel that that he has a good heart. Until he proves me wrong, I'll stand by that.

I say that as someone who can freely admit that Leto makes me roll my eyes all the time, too. He's a ridiculously pretentious intellectual who sometimes tries too hard to impress, and whose lyrics occasionally fall short for me.

But he also has the capacity to astound me, sometimes. I like artists who rip the skin away to show some really bare emotions - whether it be an actor, musician, writer or whatever. I can't imagine how that's done as oneself, without hiding behind a lengthy manuscript where no one has to really see you do it.

Besides, maybe it doesn't bother me so much that he's so ridiculously pretentious and takes such pride in his intellectualism, I mean listen to me for godsakes. There are far worse sins than patting oneself on the back for one's smarts and cultural awareness. Far worse sins, in my eyes, such as all the damn -isms I can tack onto MCR and their classless, asinine ilk.

You can judge the fans all you want, but you were fans once too, so how can you even judge us?

Anonymous said...

And the two people you idolize here now.... JGL and Tom hardy. Two big druggies themselves so how can you judge MCR??

kapunua said...

but you were fans once too,

WAY once, sister. And I already addressed that, but you probably didn't read the whole thing, or maybe you didn't understand it.

As far as JGL and TOm Hardy, fist of all, if I "idolize" anyone, it's neither of them. I've said a billion times before that I only idolize Dana Scully. ;D

I've also said a billion times that I don't care what people do with themselves - I only hope that they don't hurt themselves. However, T-Hard has admitted and overcome his problems; awesome for him. JGL I don't think of as "a big druggie" in the first place, but if I'm wrong, then I wish him success in getting over it and hope does not waste his life. He is massively talented. I don't judge addicts as bad people, because it's a disease. However, calling him an addict is dirty rumor-mongering and retarded speculation. There's just no such evidence.

He is the bad guy. Although, he has his reasons and you feel bad for him. I won't tell you anything else. :)

I agree with what you said about drug addiction. It's a horrible disease and it doesn't make those who have suffered from it bad people.

Tom Hardy had some major issues in between his big screen debut (Star Trek), which I think he viewed as a failure, and his later successes. He overcame them and seems to be doing very well right now. I hope he continues to do so.

Same goes for Robert Downey Jr., who is an amazingly talented man. I am so thankful that the world did not lose that talent during his Druggie days. We came so close.

As for JGL, he says he's an occasional pot smoker and that he has dabbled in psychedelics. I don't see how that makes him a "druggie", but like Kapunua said, what he does to his own body isn't any of my business anyway. I only know he's very talented.

Gerard was a "big old druggie" once (or at least he says he was -- you can't really believe anything he says), so you'd think MCR fans would be more sympathetic to others who have had those issues.

Anonymous said...

Like calling Gerard an addict?

See my above comment. Gerard is the one who told the world about his issues with cocaine and Xanax.

kapunua said...

Gerard called himself an addict, IIRC, and I was never one of those people who judge him for that. I do however think he exploited his addiction to turn himself into some sort of sympathetic fake hero character.

Me too. He's got a kid that he adores to the moon and is getting married and says that these days he enjoys ice cream and cuddling his son and sitting on the couch. :D Good for him. I think he's a martial artist, too, which is amazing and I know that helps a lot of people recover. ^_^

I agree. He is the perfect example of that kind of real triumph. He's amazing.

That would be so perfect! Wish I could make gifs.

Hmm, which backflip though: the wall-walking SNL "Make 'Em Laugh" one (where he later had a huge orgasm over meeting Al Gore, LOL) or the straight up aerial from the music video with Zooey Deschanel? They're' both awesome.

Anonymous said...

So what? Gerard has a child now too, that he loves, WITH the woman he is married to, a real family.

Yes, and that woman that he loves is in a band that spews horrid, hateful lyrics. Gerard takes that band out on tour with him and promotes them every chance he gets.

I don't recall where this blog was ever about Gerard being a "big ol' druggie." It has always criticized Gerard and MCR for abandoning their previous stance on women's issues, gay rights, etc., not for doing drugs.

Where have you been?

I'm thinking the SNL one. He was so perfect on that. How anyone could watch that and not fall just a tiny little bit in love is beyond me. ^_^

RDJ was caught filming an underage girl preforming sex acts for him. Is that worse than lyrics? I'm not excusing Lynz for being a part of that band, but I see nothing now to imply she is still with them. Friends, sure. A band memeber still? Nothing to show for that assumption. I think she is trying to become a better person. Why does that not deserve an ounce of understanding? Maybe someday she will properly address (and apologize) for being in that band. No one can know how a person is going to turn out simply because of their past behavior. Some people have a serious issue with this concept. That makes me sad for them. People can become something better than they were, they just have to want it and try.

Why can't things be discussed calmly, or without cruel and unwarranted insults for simply disagreeing and desiring to discuss other opinions?

I read here. I think about the issues brought up here. I like discussing things here. But I don't care for the way certain opinions are cast off because they are not the majority here. I don't see the difference here from actual 'fansites,' when that sort of thing happens. Why does it have to be one opinion is right and one is wrong? For either side of the arguments here. VV has said the point here is to discuss, not throw insults or behave childishly. When someone comes in talking that way, why respond in the same manner? People here are supposed to be smarter than that.

Hiya guys, how are you all?

I'm good. I got me some last minute tix for last night's MCR show and it was fantastic. They are the best band out there live at the mo.

They started with na na na na and played some of the new stuff but also a lot of the really old stuff.

It was just so much fun to sing along to. My 12 year old cousin totally enjoyed his first ever gig. Though he did state that the venue smelled of penis. I'm not asking.

When they sung "Honey, this mirror", they got two girls out of the crowd to sing along. I was happy for them but they turned out to be prats. One had a huge mohican hairdo, they seemed to think they were in the band. I think the look on Gerard's face said "I really didn't think this through" hahaha!

Great bloody night though.

No wonder she hates them.

Um, Hi. I only made the one comment at 6:57PM. Then I left to run some errands (I can't really take my computer with me). Do I have to show a receipt for the grocery store? This is a little insane. I wasn't aiming to cause a shit storm. Nor was I accusing or attacking anyone. I apologize if it seemed that way. I was just trying to see something better in Lynz Way. I just don't understand how her art venture compares to the mess MSI has created. I am not a fan of either. But I prefer to see something good in someone, when they are trying for it. I didn't think it was fair to fault someone for trying to do something better with their life.

I also did not make up anything about RDJ. It happened some years ago. He was picked up for it. I don't know if there are any links for it. I wasn't looking. But it was all over the news, when it happened. I have a family member who was seuxally assualted and refuses to support him in any way because of this. I wouldn't make something like that up about someone. Sometimes the media lies more than their subjects, but I don't believe I am remembering this event wrong. I am still of a fan of his and I do respect him greatly for overcoming his extreme drug issues.

I was trying to make a point about second chances. And that the ability to discuss things calmly sometimes goes out the window here. I guess the latter point was made for me. But, again I'm sorry if I didn't say it well. I'm really floored at how my comment was mangled and that so many people actually believe I hung out to banter about crap. I don't see the point in that. (I wanted to discuss.) I really don't like the name calling, but I wouldn't resort to it or do something worse like make up life-altering accusations about people, especially not to justify an opinion. So, sorry about the misunderstanding. Night guys.

I don't remember anything about RDJ being involved in an underage girl scandal. He had enough problems with his drug and drinking arrests, several stints in rehab and prison.

Substance abuse

From 1996 through 2003, Downey was arrested numerous times on drug-related charges and went several times through drug treatment programs unsuccessfully, explaining in 1999 to a judge: "It's like I have a loaded gun in my mouth and my finger's on the trigger, and I like the taste of the gunmetal."[14] He also explained his relapses by claiming to be addicted to drugs since the age of eight; his father was giving them to him as he was also an addict.[15]

In April 1996, Downey was arrested for possession of heroin, cocaine and an unloaded .357-caliber Magnum handgun, while he was speeding down Sunset Boulevard. A month later, when on parole, he trespassed into a neighbor's home while under the influence of a controlled substance, falling asleep in one of the beds.[16][17] He was sentenced to three years of probation and required to undergo mandatory drug testing. In 1997 he missed one of the court-ordered drug tests and had to spend four months in the Los Angeles County jail. When Downey missed another required drug test in 1999, he was arrested once more. Despite Downey's lawyer, John Stewart Holden, assembling for his client's 1999 defense the same team of lawyers that successfully defended O. J. Simpson during his criminal trial for murder,[15] Downey was sentenced to a three-year prison term at the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison in Corcoran, California (a.k.a. "Corcoran II"). At the time of the 1999 arrest, all of Downey's film projects had wrapped and were close to release, with the exception of In Dreams, which he was allowed to complete filming. He had also been hired for voicing "The Devil" on the NBC animated television series God, the Devil and Bob, but was fired when he failed to show up for rehearsals.[18][19]

After spending nearly a year in California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison in Corcoran, California, Downey, on condition of posting $5,000 bail, was unexpectedly freed when a judge ruled that his collective time in incarceration facilities (spawned from the initial 1996 arrests) had qualified him for early release.[20]

Downey was able to return to the big screen only after Mel Gibson, who had been a close friend to Downey since both had co-starred in Air America, paid Downey's insurance bond for the 2003 film The Singing Detective.[36] Gibson's gamble paved the way for Downey's comeback, and Downey returned to mainstream films in the mid 2000s with Gothika, for which producer Joel Silver withheld 40 percent of his salary until after production wrapped as insurance against his addictive behavior; similar clauses have become standard in his contracts since then.[37]

Anonymous said...

Downey says he has been drug-free since July 2003,[89] thanks to his family, therapy, meditation, twelve-step recovery programs, yoga and the practice of Wing Chun Kung Fu.[11] He has described his religious beliefs as "Jewish-Buddhist"[90] although he has been interested in the past in Christianity and the Hare Krishna ideology.[91] In a panel discussion, Rachel McAdams, who co-starred with Downey in Sherlock Holmes, called him a "superhero" for his "committed" work ethic.[92] On the same panel, Downey described how he worked long hours and many weekends to ensure the accuracy of his portrayal of Holmes so as to help make the film a success.[92]

Downey has been a close friend of Mel Gibson since they starred in Air America. Downey defended Gibson during the controversy surrounding The Passion of the Christ, and said "nobody's perfect" in reference to Gibson's DUI.[93] Said Gibson of Downey:[94]
“ He was one of the first people to call and offer the hand of friendship. He just said, ‘Hey, welcome to the club. Let's go see what we can do to work on ourselves.’ ”

Downey has indicated that his time in prison changed his political point of view somewhat, saying: “I have a really interesting political point of view, and it’s not always something I say too loud at dinner tables here, but you can’t go from a $2,000-a-night suite at La Mirage to a penitentiary and really understand it and come out a liberal. You can’t. I wouldn’t wish that experience on anyone else, but it was very, very, very educational for me and has informed my proclivities and politics ever since.”[95] In a 2007 interview with W magazine Downey showed the journalist a photograph of himself and his wife with then President George W. Bush.[94]

Has she said something in the effect of I'm so proud of my role in MSI and I look forward to the day they are recognized by the rest of the world Yes.

With regards to her art I cannot see how this equates to her seeking a second chance for herself, maybe she is trying to branch out, though nevertheless she is still effectively a cog in the MSI wheel and is still friends and appears to socialize with the other members and so does her husband who loves those idiots so much he has them in his video clips.

I also did not make up anything about RDJ. It happened some years ago. He was picked up for it.

You are either lying or confused. I've been a fan of Robert's ever since Less Than Zero. I have followed his career religiously, even through such disasters as Chances Are. I even have Restoration on DVD (only very ardent fans even know that film exists). He was arrested for multiple things, including breaking into a neighbor's home and sleeping in their child's bed (like Goldilocks, only a drugged out one) and he had a hell of a drug habit, for which he went to prison. But he was never, ever arrested for taping himself having sex with a minor.

Rob Lowe was. His career never quite rebounded. If you google him, you'll find accounts of that incident. People just aren't able to shake that kind of thing, even in Hollywood. He was never able to resurrect his movie career because people just don't forget that kind of thing, even in Hollywood.

If RDJ had done what you said, I would have remembered it. Moreover, there would still be some kind of account of it that you could post here as proof. You can't.

You are guilty of something we don't do, and that's coming here, spreading absolute falsehoods that you can't back up. We may slag Gerard off, but at least we tell the truth.

Rob Lowe has always given me the creeps. I watched The West Wing, which was one of the best TV shows ever made, but I could never really accept him as 'Sam the Idealist', because of that incident with the underage girl.

He also seems to have a gigantic ego and can't ever get along with his cast members. He continues to get work on TV, but he never stays with a show for long (or it gets canceled). He was stupid to leave The West Wing, although I didn't miss him when he did.

Exactly. Just like with Rob Lowe. If you look at any biography of him, his arrest in 1988 (at the age of 24) for having made a sex tape with a 16 year old girl figures very prominently.

Incidentally, Mr. Lowe claimed he did not know the girl was underage (there were two girls involved and the other was over 18) and he got a slap on the wrist (community service and probation) for the incident. Still, the press never forgot and his career suffered.

He did rebound somewhat, with bit parts in comedies like Wayne's World and roles in TV mini-series and ensemble shows, but he has never achieved anything near the success that RDJ has.

Star support for Mel Gibson

It's hard to imagine anyone supporting Mel Gibson with the racially charged and explicit rants he made towards his girlfriend, Oksana. It's unknown how many celebrities privately defend Gibson, but some well-known names are: Julia Roberts, Goldie Hawn, Helen Hunt, Danny Glover, Sigourney Weaver, Jaime Lee Curtis, Katie Holmes, Robert Downey, Jr.,.

Robert Downey, Jr. said in a 2003 interview with ET that Gibson, "through thick and thin he has had my back and said, 'I don't care I'm on his side.'"

It appears this star is returning the favor to Gibson by defending him "through thick and think."

Defending someone you once worked with and to whom you owe a debt of gratitude (and who is obviously fucked in the head) is not the same thing as marrying that person and supporting their racist behavior.

Get back to us when you can produce evidence of RDJ (or any of those other people) supporting Mel Gibson's racist comments.

I think it's admirable for RDJ to stick up for his friend instead of deserting him when he's down.

That doesn't mean RDJ endorses Gibson's behavior, any more than Gibson was endorsing RDJ's drug use when he helped him out a few years back.

Lol @people trying to draw parallels where none exist.

MCR gave MSI a podium to express their misogynist/racist/homophic lyrics when they took them out on tour with them. They also promoted them in magazine interviews. Then, they went a step further and began to adopt some of MSI's tactics (the "fuck yourselves, ladies" and Frank and Bob's twitters).

Did RDJ suddenly start spewing racist and anti-Semitic rants? Did he give Gibson a podium to express them?

No.

That's where the difference is. I realize it's hard for some people to grasp, but there is a huge difference in what RDJ did and things MCR has done.

Why anyone would want to defend MSI is beyond me.

To all the defenders: would you play the song "D******e" in a room full of black people? Hell no. Why? Because you know they would find it offensive (and chances are, you'd get your ass kicked) What about "Panty Shot"? try playing that in front of a bunch of parents. Do you think they'd be impressed?

No right minded person finds this music enjoyable, or even entertaining. The reason they became popular is because of Gerard Way. That's when I lost all respect for him.

Anyone who thought that this Mayo person was Gerard must have been outta their mind. No way Gerard could come up with the stuff I've read there. He's not that intelligent.

Me too. And a whole lot of other people.

Gerard could have fallen in love with Lindsey, married her, and kept quiet about her stupid band. But no, he had to go and promote the hell out of them. Then he had to start acting like them.

That's where he made his big mistake.

And why the hell does everyone there give a rats ass how he's feeling? It's like they're talking to a fragile kid or something.
