The art of defending racism

Someone sent me a great link in my inbox today that I want to share with you all. These are a lot of the excuses we hear from the MSICR camp and defenders...

The Art of Defending Racism

Saying or doing something racist will come naturally to you- but defending it? You’ll want to use one of the following tactics. ...

Tactical options:

A. It’s not that serious

1. We didn’t know better (and we never will)
2. You’re too sensitive
3. It’s not a big deal because it’s just (a movie, a song, a book, words, etc.)
4. Why should we care? (You don't matter anyway)
....

B. But!

...
7. We’re not discriminating AS MUCH (as other people/as we used to), isn’t that good?!? Give me a cookie.
...

C. Dismissal!

1. You’re oppressing me by making me be “PC”
2. You’re too stupid to be in this conversation and everything you say doesn’t matter
3. Racism is over now
4. If we don’t talk about it, it’ll magically go away
5. Under my definition- it’s not racist
6. You’re too angry/You’re being irrational
...

Denial of impact:

Denial of impact involves a person avoiding thinking about or understanding the harms their behavior have caused to themselves or others. By doing this, that person is able to avoid feeling a sense of guilt and it can prevent that person from developing remorse or empathy for others.

This is a really old link but it's pretty good and it reminded me of some of what people say here in defense of these people.

I think the same thing goes for misogyny and homophobia presented in these lyrics, comments and lifestyles too.

Silvia, I'm really sorry for what you're going through.

Silvia you are certainly not overweight. Please take care of yourself. The health repercussions in your middle age and old age could be avoided if you eat healthily and look after yourself. I know it isn't easy. Good luck.

silvia said...

Thank you again 1:48, could I just know your name? Just to thank you again for your attention

silvia said...

Thank you all. I'll do my best.

But, just so you know, I'm like this ALSO because of MCR.

You probably think it's stupid, but 5 years ago I wanted to suicide and I cut myself.

My best friend and the music helped me so much you can't imagine it.
I felt so incredibly good with Gerard's words, the ones about the girls, who have not to lose weight, exc.
I felt that someone understood me even if we didn't know each other personally, and it was amazing.

Then everything changed, they changed.

And Gerard said he started to lose weight to be accepted and loved. And he didn't say it was a wrong thing to do.
I just felt ridicolous for having believed them.

This is clearly not the main reason, it's just to let you understand something.

Silvia try to listen to the part of you that knows what is happening. The other part wants the control, it will never be satisfied no matter what weight you are, that is why you need to talk to someone, before this side is the only side you hear. You are a very brave girl.

silvia said...

Thank you again 1:48

other anon, not 1.48 said...

Silvia, try to focus on yourself and not MCR. You are a brave person to admit this, even if only on a blog, it is a brave thing and a first step. Please really think about looking after yourself. Take care.

silvia said...

Thank you 2:25 I'm feelin better, you are all very caring

I shouldn't have written here.

1:48 said...

You're a fucking callous idiot 2:34.

Anonymous said...

Gerard Way was/is an anorexic. Go find that article circa 2006 where he said that. And that's the cue for all fatties in mcr fandom to stop eating because their hero is an anorexic and therefore they should copy whatever he do.

Silvia don't let one stupid idiot and their comments get to you.

They tell you to hurt yourself to not eat.

Don't talk about things you don't know.

I just hope you'll never get in touch with these kind of things

My Chemical Romance Say 'Na Na Na' Video Is Their 'Biggest Moment'
By James Montgomery

'It's that moment where I can remember the sun shining on us ... and we're all running around firing ray guns,' MCR frontman Gerard Way says.

In their near-decade of existence, My Chemical Romance has had plenty of rather huge moments: touring with Green Day, premiering the first single from their Black Parade album some 70 stories above New York City and covering Bob Dylan for the "Watchmen" soundtrack, just to name a few.

But according to the band themselves, all of those achievements pale in comparison to their sprawling, spastic video for "Na Na Na". To hear them tell it, just making the clip was the biggest achievement of their entire career ... because it capped a long journey back from the brink.

"It was a really big moment for the band. It was a really special moment, because it was all of us together, acting, living it, being part of it, like living the actual dream that we had all talked about ... and then to physically be in it?" MCR frontman Gerard Way told MTV News. "It was, to me, the biggest moment ever, being in this band. It used to be when I walked on the set of [the] 'Black Parade' [video], but now it's that moment where I can remember the sun shining on us, and there's dirt everywhere and sand and we're all running around firing ray guns. That was the biggest moment to me."

And though, by his own estimation, Way spent "three ... or four years" toiling away on the basic concept of the "Na Na Na" video (and MCR's brand-new Killjoys reinvention), his greatest achievement as co-director was creating a visceral, hard-charging thrill ride for his bandmates. And years from now, that's what they'll remember most about the clip.

"It was incredible ... it was so much fun," guitarist Frank Iero laughed. "Any time you get a chance to drive really fast in the desert, shooting ray guns at dudes in Dracula masks ... are you kidding me?"

I lost my respect for Jessicka when I found out that all the feminist/anti-fatphobia blogs on her website are copy-pasted from somewhere else.

I just looked. They aren't. She gives credit to the junk food science blog the one part is taken
from.

"While going through my strange transformation I started doing a lot of online research on topics related to weight loss, crash dieting and fat phobia. I even delved a little bit into 'pro-ana' communities on the web. But I digress. While doing research, a few friends and I have kept up with the Junk Food Science blog, which logically picks apart media bullshit, leaving behind scientific and factual information. Have a look and draw your own conclusions after reading the blog, but the gist is this: fat isn't killing us. Cancer, heart disease, and the like are mostly the result of your genes. Dieting IS damaging our bodies. Diets don't actually work. Here's the 411 on medical fat phobia: the "war on fat" is harmful and deadly, especially to women, in several ways:"

I think she speaks against fat phobia and that is truly a good thing. Nobody does that.

I think she speaks against fat phobia and that is truly a good thing. Nobody does that.

She is using the wrong terminology. A phobia is extreme anxiety or an irrational fear over something. I agree that there is much misleading information and continuing discrimination and stereotyping towards people of a certain weight, though to constantly talk about "fat phobia" and using an extreme descriptive term, suggests to me her experience has made her very sensitive and still does. If people are truly "phobic" as she suggests, then it is an actual disorder similar to people who suffer from anorexia have an extreme and irrational fear of putting on weight and see themselves as "fat".

Anonymous said...

According to the National Cancer Institute, obesity contributes to cancer of the colon, breast (post-menstrual), endometrium, kidneys and esophagus. There have also been links to obesity and cancer of the pancreas and gall bladder.

Obesity also contributes to Type 2 Diabetes. Nearly 90 per cent of people who develop it are overweight.

I don't really have anything against Jessicka personally, but she needs to stop posting mis-information on her blogs.

While genetics does play a huge role in cancer and heart disease, diet and weight do as well.

She should be encouraging young women to have healthy lifestyles, which includes eating healthy foods and getting exercise. People don't have to be thin to be healthy, but obesity does, in fact, make people sick.

Bitching about "fat phobia" (ridiculous terminology, btw) is not doing anyone any good.

Anonymous said...

Not necessarily. I mean, after all 'homophobia' has the word 'phobia' in it, and that covers hatred of gay people.

Regarding her tweet, I thought she was talking about people who discriminate against people who are overweight/obese, not people who have eating disorders.

Anonymous said...

I've been away from the MCR fandom and this place for some time now because I'm so over them and their crap. I came here because I just saw the video for that new song of theirs and I wanted to ask how long Gerard has been wearing Rihanna's hair. He looks like a total douchebag, by the way.

Another word that implies the discrimination is irrationally fear based and leaves no room to question how negative belief systems are formed.

The terminology is correct as there is an entire movement based upon said term. All you have to do is google it.

Also "Fat Attitudes: A Celebration of Large Women" !

She does encourage young women to have healthy lifestyles. But in doing so she also does not berate those who are already overweight, she encourages them.

fat phobics connotation is much like the term 'homophobia'.

Both have subjective cultural and/or emotional colorations in addition to the explicit or denotative meaning of any specific word or phrase in a language, i.e. emotional association with a word.

She is using it correctly.

"I love it when fataphobes gain weight. It might be the only way they understand fat acceptance & expand their ideas about what is beautiful."

You are saying this is a positive statement? It's tantamount to saying that you love it when a "homophobe" has a child who is gay. In that case, the child would be subjected to disapproval and lack of love and acceptance by its parents, not a "EUREKA!" moment where said parent suddenly accepts all gays and renounces his earlier homophobic tendencies.

When "fataphobes" gain weight, does she really think they automatically change their attitudes about weight? Because I seriously doubt that's the case. Someone who hates or fears fat people would then only grow to hate him/herself. How would that possibly do society any good>

Her comment sounds like a sick desire for revenge to me.

Not really. When somebody can walk a mile is somebody else's shoes maybe then can have more of understanding about how difficult things can be.

Plus you disregard all the positive things she is saying to overweight young women. It seems like to me that she truly cares to build up these girl's self esteem. Which no matter how you twist it is not a bad thing.

Clearly she's not perfect. At least she is being honest and not candy coating the issue. I think all the positive reinforcement she gives to young over weight women trumps one comment, in my opinion.
Plus she is huge supporter of Noh8. It still bothers me that nobody in MCR, MSI or the zoid have made a single tweet supporting that cause? I'm sure a large section of both band's fan bases are LGBT.

I don't think that is what she was saying at all. I think she is saying it might be easier to have empathy and try to benefit from the experience of being over weight if you have been thinner prior. Never judge a person until you have walked a mile in their shoes? Considering she has been on both sides of the scale, I think she has right to make such comments.

How is it sending a positive message?

Some people say things to give themselves an image. You have to look beyond what they say and see how they really support their cause to make a real impact.

Anonymous said...

It sounds to me like she is trying to do some good by encouraging girls to love themselves and respect their bodies no matter their size.

THIS

Is it true she lost a lot of weight herself? I'm curious because she talks of self acceptance, yet I'm wondering if she felt compelled to change herself?

Anonymous said...

@jeffmarygrigg Getting positive is key. Get to where you are comfortable weight wise. Don't conform to magazine beauty standards set by men. Sun Oct 17 16:46:39 2010 via web in reply to jeffmarygrigg

Don't follow these "magazine beauty standards" even though you follow Vogue London on twitter.

Lynn said...

According to Eliza's Twitter she sat in the front row at the Scream Awards, next to the Twilight cast. How did that happen? When did Eliza become a celeb?

I watched that and you did get to see her. I think if you dressed up you could win a spot to sit with a celebrity. She went as tank girl.

Vogue London on twitter.

I agree with most of what is being said BUT Vouge London covers fine art, fine dining, Nobel Prize-winning poets, cutting edge photography, French culture, particularly cuisine, very unlike it's American counterpart. To say her encouraging statement is no longer valid because she follows Vouge London on twitter is just stupid.

Interesting read. Make your own opinions.

vogue london

Its emphasis is on fashion and beauty. It may cover other topics of interest in relation to culture, though to suggest a person follows this magazine solely for those articles is stupid. Vogue is considered a fashion bible. Carine Roitfeld's French Vogue is more cutting edge with photography etc.

Anonymous said...

I think that is matter of opinion.

Anonymous said...

And also can't somebody be interested in "vogue" fashion and not be consumed or be a follower of it's anorexic stereotypes?

I want to make an admission since I have posting here awhile now. I truly like Jessicka Addams as an artis. I am even a member of the facebook page I posted above.

I cannot for the life of me understand why the hell she associates with the Zoid or Gerard?

I used to be a MCR fan, never an MSI fan. I was pointed in the direction of this blog because I'm sick of the likes of Gerard Way making irrelevant trash that the tween masses consider ground breaking. Besides disagreeing about J.A. I've enjoyed my stay. Even thinking of getting a handle.

Am I banned now? lol

Cute kid, but I wouldn't say beautiful. Not even.

Anonymous said...

She is very cute!

Anonymous said...

i suspect she will be cuter when she can dress herself.

Anonymous said...

and when she has hair. shouldnt she have hair at her age?

Lynn said...

Bandit is pretty. Can't really tell with the sunglasses, but she looks like her mom and dad. I don't think the majority of people here thought something was wrong with the baby. I keep my comments about MCR and NOT their kids. Children are innocent and i don't think they should be brought up anywhere in a negative way.

Anonymous said...

Most kids do have quite a bit of hair by the time they turn one, but then I've seen some who are still quite bald at that age. She's what, 17 months or so? Maybe it's just really patchy and that's why they always cover it up?

Anonymous said...

I keep my comments about MCR and NOT their kids. Children are innocent and i don't think they should be brought up anywhere in a negative way.

Agreed. I may not be able to stand her parents (esp. the dad), but I would never say anything bad or wish anything bad for their child. I hope she's happy and healthy and manages to cope with the ridiculous name her parents saddled her with.

Anonymous said...

My daughter had very patchy hair at one year, but by the time she was two she had a full head of it. Now she has the most gorgeous hair you can imagine.

Anonymous said...

I think some people here worried about Bandit because Lindsey seemed high as a kite in that Rock Sound interview that was done right around the time she got pregnant. It was genuine concern for the child.

I hope you are right and there is nothing wrong with her. Developmental delays often don't have physical characteristics that show in pictures. Although if she had FAS, it would most likely show in her eyes, which you can't see.

:/ I don't know...You can't really tell. Cute? Sure. Beautiful? Ehhh. Gerard and Lindsey are not that good looking, well in my opinion.

I personally think she should not even be posting pictures of her daughter and respect her privacy.

Of course not!

Anonymous said...

I wonder what Getard thinks about his wife posting pictures of his kid. Yeah, Bandit is her child too but didn't he say they were 'oh so private'?

My ass.

Anonymous said...

i think hes the one taking it. also is anyone else disturbed by how tight shes holding her daughters leg?

i hate parents that use physical roughness to get their kid to do things.

Anonymous said...

That's a lot of bullshit speculation, 9:56PM. She's holding her leg to take the picture. I don't see anything wrong with that, or the kid. She's probably wearing the bandana to look like a Killjoy. I personally think the sunglasses are to keep a bit of privacy for the kid. These rude comments about her are really too far. Yes she is a celeb kid, and yes the parent(s) are posting pics of her. But have some fucking heart. Watch what you say or imply. She's just a kid and none of us know shit about her or what really goes on in her home. There are enough people around them to put a stop to anything negative happening. And none of you should speculate about a fucking kid, unless there was real evidence that something bad was happening with her. Reaching a fucking low point, you guys. Stick to the parents, there's plenty there for you to run in the gutter.

9:26, 9:27, 9:33 said...

I personally think the sunglasses are to keep a bit of privacy for the kid.

Privacy is not posting pictures of your child.

9:56, 10:03 has a point. All the speculation should not involve their child, leave her alone, even if your comment did not have a bad intention.

Anonymous said...

sorry. it wasnt meant as an insult to the child. just an observation on the mothers grip with a personal opinion on the subject matter.

Anonymous said...

she looks like a happy kid. despite the speculation, im sure gerard and lynz are doing a good job raising her.

Anonymous said...

10:14, considering the outfit she is wearing in the photo, if she were to be standing with a bunch of other children her age (say at a preschool or a park) without the bandana and sunglasses -would you be able to pick her out amongst them all? I highly doubt it. If we don't get any news or pictures of her, we speculate that something is wrong or they are not interested in or don't love her. If we do get news or pictures, well, we get a lot of the crap comments in here this evening. What's a rock star to do? Not have any children? Why begrudge them the chance to become better people through being parents. I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt, until I see proof to do otherwise. And if that happens, I won't just complain about it on a blog. I'll do my best to contact someone to help the child.

9:26, 9:27, 9:33 said...

I understand 10:34. Even though I still consider her mother a total idiot and I won't even say what I think of her father, I believe the child is innocent and should not be discussed.

Anonymous said...

10:34, do you have siblings? Cousins? Do you ever babysit for a friend or relative, a neighbor? Would you like a stranger implying something monstrous about you and how you treat those children? And for no apparent reason than you are with them, or have a picture of yourself with the child? A little perspective, please. At least when it comes to children. As Lynn said, they are innocent. Shit on the parents, but watch what you infer from innocent actions as well. There's a world of hell for any parent wrongfully accused. And an even worse hell possible for a child that is taken away. I wouldn't wish it on any person, even those I greatly dislike. I appreciate your comment back, but be careful when kids are involved. It's not funny, harmless jabbing or deserving of (seemingly) safe & caring parents and their children, nor should it be.

Anonymous said...

Frank may be an ass in many other ways but I have more respect for him because he and his wife have refrained from releasing any personal details about his children. I hope he continues to do that.

Anonymous said...

Thank you 12:44/9:26 ect. I've worked with kids for a long time. I get touchy about it. Sorry to rant at everyone. And I do understand, there has been a lot of deserving insults throw at both parents. I just want the kid left out of it. She seems to be doing great to me. There are signs to look for. That kid is happy and healthy as far as I can see. That's all anyone should ask for and appreciate. Have a good night.

I've seen tons of pics of Metallica's children. No one's accused them of exploiting them. What makes G/L Way so different with what they've done with Bandit?

silvia said...

Bandit is beautiful like every other little child.
She's really cute. The noisy thing here, is that her parents don't protect her privacy but use her as publicity.
That's what makes me really sad for her.

Anonymous said...

Her parents are wankers. I hope she has better influences in her extended family.

Anonymous said...

I'm so jealous I could scream.

Anonymous said...

That picture of Bandit is too cute for words. Her little button nose and smile is adorable. She is beautiful.

Anonymous said...

She looks like Gerard.

Anonymous said...

I don't see why Lyndsey should be any different from any other proud mother.

Why shouldn't show pictures of her daughter?

Is it using or exploiting your child when any other celebrity parent poses with their children for the cover of magazine of puts one of their children in their movie?

Or when celebrity designers open their own clothing lines and use their babies / children as models?

Jennifer Lopez has just appeared in an international campaign with her twin toddlers to raise money for Cancer. Is that exploiting her children?

Lyndsey hasn't flooded her twitter with pictures of Bandit. She's posted how many pictures of her? 3 or 4 in a year and half.

Anonymous said...

I think she favors the Way side of the family too. From what I can see.

Anonymous said...

I think people are bit paranoid about kids. The vast majority of people are normal, and so what if she wants to show a picture. SO FUCKING WHAT?

Anonymous said...

If anything, I think the Ways have been pretty stingy with pictures of Bandit. Obviously the fangirls have been dying to see pictures of her and they have resisted the pressure to post them all over the place like some celebs do. I can't stand her douchewad parents, but I do at least respect their decision to keep pictures of her at a minimum.

Of course, they weren't offered tons of money to put her on the cover of People or some other celebrity rag, so we don't know how they would have reacted to that. Let's face it, mainstream media doesn't even know who the Ways are.

Anonymous said...

You all used to whine about Eliza's attention seeking, that dumbass is no different.

Anonymous said...

I think Bandit is really cute and looks adorable in that picture. She's obviously a healthy and happy baby.

But I have to say this, if I were Gerard Way and I knew what types of fans I had-the crazy, fanatical type, I would never post a picture of my child on the internet. By doing so sparks interest in the baby. If Bandit stays out of sight then she stays out of mind. I applaud Frank for not posting pictures of his girls. He's clearly a lot smarter then Way.

Anonymous said...

In MCR's case, where so many of their fans get the idea that they are "friends" with the band members, I think it's an excellent idea for them to refrain from posting pictures of their kids.

I don't so much think they have a problem with young fans, but some of the middle age women who follow them can be scary. Stalker types who have delusional "relationships" with band members could be a serious threat to their children.

Anonymous said...

Lol @some kid who posted on chemicalromance that she's been calling around to various venues in the UK and they aren't allowing Rayguns or any other kind of toy/prop gun into the upcoming MCR shows.

So many kids are going to show up with them and either have them confiscated at the door or take them back to their cars -- which isn't going to be an option for kids who queue for hours.

I saw this coming a mile away.

Anonymous said...

MCR should post on the official website and their twitter that toy rayguns, props and toy weapons of any kind will not be allowed in venues under any circumstance. In big bold print.

Anonymous said...

Kids can naive and have a hard time understanding that security and police can't always differentiate toy weapons from real weapons in dark, crowded venues.

It would be a tragedy if some kid got a toy gun into one of those venues and security mistook it for a real weapon when that kid held it up in the air. Or if someone in the crowd yelled he's got a gun.

They must be made to understand that it's a serious safety issue for the band and for all people in attendance of the concerts.

Anonymous said...

This is true, although some of the people I know who have talked about their Killjoys costumes (including a gun) have been in their 30's and should really know better.

I've also seen some people say they are going to try and hide their Rayguns when they go into the venue. I hope this doesn't happen, because I've been to some venues where the security can be over-zealous and people can sometimes be seriously hurt.

"If there's any rebellion in the record, it's a rebellion against ourselves and kind of against - definitely against being assimilated into modern rock culture and cutting your hair and looking respectable and getting into your thirties and like - all right, we're gonna be this kind of rock band, because that's what people are grooming us to be. It's a rebellion against that very thing, and so there's no rebellion against the corporation, though . . . It's wholly fighting against the idea of the corporate cleanup. And what better way, like, who's actually kind of more suited to do or say that than a band that's actually within a corporate system?"

-- Gerard Way

Okay, how can you be rebelling against "corporate cleanup" and not against the "corporation"? If he really wants to "rebel" he should rebel against Warner pushing a $70.00 Box Set on kids who don't have that money to spend. Or maybe they should rebel against MTV who aren't about either art or music, but about pushing stupid dumbed-down Reality TV on the masses? But instead, Warner is probably paying MTV to let their resident fanboy JMont write something about them every two days.

Gerard Way and his band of sellouts: fighting for Art. Yeah. Right.

He's more full of shit than ever.

Anonymous said...

I'm a business major, and I don't think "corporate cleanup" means what Gerard thinks it means.

So full of shit is right. I bet it took them longer to come up with this spiel to try and sell this record than it did to come up with the actual music.

He and the rest of that band need to have the words "Corporate Drone" stamped across their idiotic foreheads.

You people just can't stand the fact that MTV loves MCR. It's the most anticipated album of the year according to an MTV poll - better than Kanye West, Taylor Swift, Kings of Leon and others. Why wouldn't they write about it. It's going to break sales records when it comes out and none of you can stand that.

Not.

Okay, sure, Sweetie. You go right ahead and believe your little poll that makes you think that MCR is going to outsell Taylor Swift and all those other artists (most of whom are assured of outselling MCR). Especially given that both Na Na Na and that other screechy song (I can't remember the name) have already fallen off iTunes charts.
