Oh my God, I had a whole post typed out and Blogger crashed and deleted it without saving a draft.

I forgot most of what I wrote so I have to start over.

I notice some of you talking about Laura Slessinger and her use of the N- Bomb recently. I saw some of the fall-out from that in the news too. And it made me think about what gets said to a lot of you sometimes.

We see a lot of MSICR fans saying that MSICR have the first amendment right to use whatever language they want and we have no right to stop them. I think once even Lyn-Z made a comment about "Thank God for the first amendment" when talking about her band's lyrics.

But I have always thought, no one is TRYING to take away their right to use hate speech. We have the right to our opinion too when it comes to lyrics that are racist, homophobic and misogynist.

This article about Laura Slessinger and the first amendment said a lot of what needs to be said here too.

These are the parts I wanted to quote.

The First Amendment protects us from the government, and not from other Americans who disagree with what we have to say. “Congress shall make no law” — the first five words of the First Amendment — say it all: No government body can limit our rights to speak out. In this case, there’s no government action, just public outrage and pressure.

Boycotts are also protected by the First Amendment. Dr. Laura complains about being “bullied” by those who might pressure her radio affiliates or advertisers, but boycotts are a time-honored use of the First Amendment to address perceived wrongs and have played a role in virtually every social movement in American history.

But the whole article is really good.

MSICR are allowed to use hate speech in their lyrics. MSICR fans are allowed to listen to those lyrics and interpret them any way they want. They can think they are about something else, if they want to. You interpret things however it makes sense to you.

YOU are also allowed to hate those lyrics, take them at face value (which the bands themselves always say), and to boycott them if you want..... forever if that's what you want.

There will always be arguments as long as there are lyrics, tweets, concerts and interviews with that kind of speech. There will be disagreements no matter what. But disagreeing is NOT the same thing as squashing someone else's rights.

I really thought that article said it better than I could have.

Orly? Hardly surprising as they are virtually in-laws now. Let me guess: he's Dr Death Defying. Would explain why the MSI people are following him.

Only a minority of teenage boys are into ray guns and the apocalypse.

I don't think that will work. My little brother (almost 13) just watched it and said it was "the lamest thing I've ever seen."

He didn't like the technicolor ray guns. He said they looked like water pistols for girls.

Teenage boys do like sci-fi and comics, but not this rainbow shit with roller-blading "ladyboys."

Anonymous said...

I wonder where one gets bright red hair dye in a post-apocalyptic world?

Ray guns, really? From, like the 1950s? I believe teenage boys prefer Blasters.

If they are trying to drop the thirteen year old fangirl this is not the way to do it.

Grant Morrison is the villian (hero) that chokes Gerard. Seriously, i wouldn't doubt if Jimmy and Steve are the dudes with the masks on.

Anonymous said...

I can't really even hear Gerard's voice. Is it just my computer malfunctioning or is it kind of drowned out by everything else that's going on?

And WTF with the technicolor toy guns?

Anonymous said...

i wouldn't doubt if Jimmy and Steve are the dudes with the masks on.

Absolutely pathetic and typical MCR.

Lynn said...

They probably drowned it out on purpose. Yeah, the guns looked like water guns. I will say one nice thing about it and i will probably never live it down, but i liked Gerards hair.O_O

Anonymous said...

It reminds me of Gaga's telephone clip. The presentation, the technicolor, the whole comic feel of the video. And the references to the American flag.

Word's out that the video was made at the same location Gaga used for Telephone. No, they're not ripping off Gaga/sarcasm.

I just don't know about Gerard anymore. Maybe I'm not giving this album a chance but I don't understand why they took it in this direction when so many of us fans were hoping and expecting a return to the band's punk sound. I know I can't say this on any of the fan communities or I'll get crucified, but I am so disappointed I feel kind of sick to my stomach. I still wanted to believe in this band but it just feels like they don't care what the fans want. They just want to live in their self contained little arty world and to hell with the rest of us. I know I sound entitled, but I was one of those people who supported them through everything, Eliza, PR, the offensive tweets and now I feel like they just shoved a big fat middle finger at me. "Fuck you, we're going to be artists, not musicians. It's art so suck it."

I don't even. I think I'm done.

Anonymous said...

I think it kind of sounds like The Ramones.

Anonymous said...

This. The fans don't even seem to be listening to the song. They're just watching the video and going OOOOH PRETTY!

The only similarity I see to The Ramones is the length of the video. Two minutes even.

Anonymous said...

I understand how some MCR fans will feel let down by this new cd. I understood how some felt let down by TBP.

We fans often purchase a band's 1st EP or full length cd and expect them to keep that same sound and image forever.

That's simply an unrealistic expectation on the fans' part.

Most bands evolve. They grow up. They change. They experiment. If they don't, they're left behind.

MCR is still a very young band in terms of musical output. This is only their 4th cd.

They are much too young a band to be locked into any sound. I think it's wonderful that they choose to experiment a little.

I say that as a person who never felt that MCR was out there trying to save the world. Come on. Let's get real. No musicians form bands to save the world. They play music because they want to play music. Period.

And, whether the audience sees and feels it or not, music is art.

MCR is making art. They've always made art. Along with every other band and musician out there.

Kudos to them for mixing some new shades of old primary colors. I find it refreshing. :)

Anonymous said...

MCR's next tour is going to be filled with young girls with red hair, wearing brightly coloured outfits, shooting toy guns into the air. Must be fun to watch.

Anonymous said...

Here's my 2 cents on the trailer they posted:

# 1: I can tolerate the music, it wasn't as bad as i expected.

# 2: Their new concept is ridiculous. 30-something men dressed in Akira jackets, carrying toy guns in some post-apocalyptic world setting? Fuck, even my middle-school siblings think its stupid.

Anonymous said...

For anyone who wondered why Bob left the band, your question was answered.

I imagine it went down somewhat like this-

Gerard - "Hey guys, I was thinking we should trash what we have recorded and do this thing as the Killjoys (insert rambling ripped-off storyline). You know all post-apacolyptic, end of the world party and shit. We'll dress the part and use ray-guns and everything. Whatcha think?"

Bob - "I'm outta here. I'm a musician. I won't dress up like another one of your characters. It's embarrassing. I just wanna play the drums in a rock band."

silvia said...

It's time for My Mindless Chemical Indulgence, guys.

The notion of this being post-apocalyptic yet so filled with color makes it seem like anime to me. So yeah, anime fans will probably consider it art.

I have a bit of a problem with the bad guys in their starched white coats and the guys with technicolor hair, rayguns and leather jackets in a post-apocalyptic world. Yeah, you can tell me it's fantasy all you want, but to me it just looks like something that's straight out of a Saturday morning cartoon. I grew out of those a long time ago.

Some fans will love it, I'm sure. Others will pretend to love it for a while then go off and find other, more mature bands to listen to like I did with TBP.

I suppose the only thing that matters is whether or not the band is happy with it. Something tells me they'll be trashing it in a few years, but that's nothing new.

Anonymous said...

I agree and coming from a guy who was swearing at kids in the audience over having glow sticks just a couple of years ago, this seems a little strange.

I think it's time most of us realize that this band isn't for us anymore. It's still for those 13-16 year old kids who find this type of thing cool. We just need to move on.

Lynn said...

The fans don't even seem to be listening to the song. They're just watching the video and going OOOOH PRETTY!

That and they haven't heard anything from the band in awhile so of course they are going to be excited. We will see how the songs stand on their own, without all of the auto tune and visuals.

and "to do something deliberately knowing it would inflame others" is not simply a "hallmark of immaturity", it's what artists do. provoking a reaction of people and audiences is the very core of art. and of course some of these reactions will be negative. in fact, the negative reactions are the most interesting ones, as they are most memorable.

The thing that makes me question Gerard's integrity the most is the fact that so many people who used to be close to him seem to bear grudges against him now: Brian, Bert McCracken, Matt Pellisier, and now even Bob (who apparently made some comment to a fan about being tired of working with "divas").

I can't help but think that people who get too close to him are risking getting burned.

Gerard and Co. can do whatever they damn well want with their so-called "art" and it doesn't affect me at all. An artist openly encourages reactions, knowing they could be either good or bad. Hopping on a website to pronounce proudly to her critics to 'go suck it' IS matter how you try to justify it a)immature b) unprofessional.

Traditionally artists react to criticism of their art by not reacting to it. They show the world that they believe in their art by letting it stand on its own. That's the classy thing to do.

If an artist has to defend his own art from critics, he comes off as insecure and immature.

Anonymous said...

there doesn't have to be! as long as it's executed well (and we have yet to see about that), who cares if it's new? there is nothing in the world of art which hasn't been stolen or lifted off someone else's work. kings of leon are not "new". lady gaga is not "new". virtually nothing and no one is.
there has not been ONE movie or song in the last decades that was not imitating or referencing anyone else's work. there cannot be such a thing, it's impossible.
art does not have to be "new". it should touch people and make them think. that's all.

Anonymous said...

I agree that art doesn't have to be new. I agree that it should touch people and make them think. And maybe, just maybe, four guys dressed in snazzy neon bright jackets with brightly colored hair shooting neon colored ray guns at people in starched white coats wearing latex masks in some post-apocalyptic world (where the mega-watt colors of their polka-dotted tights or the freshly laundered brightness of their Clorox whites is not obscured by all the dust) will touch some people deeply and make them think.

I don't care for either Alicia or Lindsey, but honestly, I feel that how they conduct their private life and finances is none of our business.

Lindsey did go to art school and she seems serious about this art thing. I don't see how we can tag her art show as "worthless" having not seen the work she is contributing to it.

They don't. My mom was a stay at home mom for 12 years while my brother and I were little. She says she is very grateful for that time.

It wouldn't be the life I would choose and I know my mom had to put up with some crap from my dad that she wouldn't have if she'd been more financially independent, but it's the life she chose and she was happy with it.

Although she's happier now that she's working and more self-sufficient.

Mrs feminism 2008.

i have not followed your discussion on feminism on here in detail, but as far as i am aware, concentrating on your art while your husband makes the money and is perfectly fine with it does not necessarily discredit a woman as a feminist.

You are disgusting. Lie your way through your life.

Anonymous said...

is that your comeback?
how am i "disgusting"? how am i "lying my way through my life"?

insulting me is not making those statements any more comprehensible.

if you're referring to me - my name is not jessica. and i am not particularly defending lindsey, i don't know enough about her to do that. like i said before, i don't even care about her that much. i was simply asking a few questions about things i didn't understand here and entering a discussion.

Sorry you were given such a lousy reception. I was here talking to you earlier (I'm the one who made the remarks about the shiny clean post-apocalyptic world) but had to leave and it looks like you got stuck with one of the the "I hate Lindsey, she's the root of all evil" anons.

Not all of us think like that. We may not like Lindsey or her band but we don't blame Gerard's behavior on her. He's a grown man and he makes his own choices.

Yeah, I think Lindsey is an idiot and I hated her fake feminism, fake role model bullshit, but my dislike for MCR is based on Gerard's and Frank's actions, not Lindsey's.

This makes me think that you ARE from Mayo's and you wrote those "GTFO / go back to Mayo's" notes to yourself, just so you could say "wah wah, the people at VV's are so mean, they told me to go away!!!1111"

Because you've done that before, haven't you? Quite a few times.

Which one are you? I think OPL.

Trust me on this, as an old-timer to these blogs: She gave herself that reception. They did that all the time at Mayo's, attacking themselves and then pretending it was someone else to try to discredit them.

The OPs were the biggest ones for doing that and they got caught at it quite a few times.

I call Mayo Troll on this one.

She was probably the same person who came in here with the "Lindsey is a hypocrite" crap as well. It didn't have anything to do with the conversation and just came out of nowhere.

When we try to have a reasonable discussion with these people they can't deal so they start acting like haters. Anything to discredit us.

God, if I read the term "shaking and crying" one more time...

I realize it's meant to be funny, but it got fucking old around the time The Dark Knight was out and people were "shaking and crying" over Heath Ledger's performance. And with MCR's crazy ass fans it rings a little bit too true. I bet some of them really are shaking and crying.

I'm too old for this shit.

meant "entering a dialogue" in the broadest sense where any form of communication with a speaker and a recipient can be considered a dialogue.

A dialogue is a conversation between people. A one sentence reaction does not entail a conversation and is certainly not a dialogue.

How can you possibly know who an anon is and where they are from? At the best only VV, with the use of a stat tracker, can determine where a person is from. Any one else claiming they know who is behind an anon comment must be hellishly psychic.

Grow up.

thank you. i am the one asking the questions and being told to "gtfo" earlier. i have certainly not been talking to myself (why would i do that anyway?) and i still don't know what "mayo's" is and have nothing to do with that.

i have never commented on here before that, my questions were simply sparked by some statements made here that i wanted to understand. i did not want to "discredit" you. however, most of them are still incomprehensible to me, and i guess it will stay that way.

as for my stance on feminism:

That's like saying I'm a feminist, but I'm going to do the traditional girl thing and leave my husband to support me because it's all too hard and he is the man, while I go and do this little ol' art thing

please do not twist my words. i said that there is nothing wrong with two partners agreeing on a way to sustain themselves that does not necessarily involve both of them earning money. if gerard and lindsey have such an agreement, then why should you criticize her or him for it?
the same goes for gerard, by the way. if he was to stay at home and work on his art, while lindsey was out and earn the money, you would criticize her for leaving her kid at home, yet the principle's the same.

don't confuse feminism with distinguishing oneself from others. women and men should be equal and have the same rights, that's what my understanding of feminism is about. if yours is not, then please don't assume that for everyone.

Anonymous said...

i have to disagree. a "dialogue" is first and foremost an exchange between two people. a statement and a reaction to it equal such an exchange and can thus be called a "dialogue".

Anonymous said...

"Suck it" was directed the the MCR fans that were deluging her twitter with responses, not to anyone here.

duly noted, yet some people on here are offended obviously. my point still stands - don't criticize her for doing something and then go and do it yourself.

The regular people who comment on this blog do not attack people in that manner. I'm guessing it was someone trying to discredit this blog. However the criticisms of Lindsey are still valid.

Totally disagree with your interpretation.

I never read the comment that way. I thought they meant that a woman cannot say she represents something then sinks back into a traditional role. You don't know if Gerard approves, most of the men I know find themselves as providers with little say.

Anonymous said...

Sorry I don't know if you are part of the music industry but most people in the real working world already juggle this arrangement. And the majority of women work part time with an infant. She has it easy.

Anonymous said...

You don't know if Gerard approves, most of the men I know find themselves as providers with little say.

neither do you, which is why criticism of this behaviour is practically impossible. just because "most of the men you know" act that way, gerard does not have to be such a man.
i am not trying to defend lindsey, i am just saying that you shouldn't base your criticism on something you have no knowledge about. as the user before you commented:
If that is really happening, though no one knows only those closest to them.

and no one else has to.

true, she might. but what of it? what do you expect her to do?

Anonymous said...

There is always speculation and they will never escape it. The way they present themselves has a lot to do with it. They have to get used to it, and you will never stop the criticism no matter how much of your logic you try to employ.

Anonymous said...

they definitely are. but they should be able to back them up when they publish them, otherwise it's just polemic and they will never escape criticism, just like anyone in the spotlight cannot escape speculation.

Anonymous said...

What they work out is between them. If he is happy to have full financial responsibility what can you say to that. Nothing.

No one is stopping that.

Anonymous said...

I didn't say they "act" that way. I meant they found themselves bearing most of the financial burden when they thought their wives would go back to work. It happens, women change their minds for whatever reason and men find it difficult to argue with their wives.

Anonymous said...

No one is stopping that.

well, since i have started posting here, i have been insulted, numerous people have told me my comments and questions were "silly" or answered them with one-liners that lacked any substance. only very few were able to make their point of view clear. i have been told to "gtfo" or give up, because logic was not possible here.

i think it's safe to assume that criticism of polemic is not necessarily tolerated here.

Anonymous said...

yes, and some people like dogs and others like cats. still doesn't mean that this applies to someone you don't even know, like lindsey and gerard, that's all i'm trying to say.
